MOLE (n)

-also abbreviated as mol

-amount of substance containing the same number of atoms
- a mole consists of the Avogadro’s number (N) which is 6.02x1023 particles
(which may be atoms, molecules or ions)
- a mole of any element contains the same number of atoms, one mole of a
compound also contains the Avogadro’s number

*** Molar Mass (M)

- Mass of 1 mole of atom, molecule or formula unit of a substance equivalent
to atomic/molecular or formula mass

Mass-Mole-Entities Relationship

mass of substance mass of substance

Mol = Mol =
atomic mass(for element ) Molar mass (for compound)

Mol to Mass = n x M or atomic mass

Mol to number of entities (particles, atoms, molecules, ions) = n x N

¿ of entities
# of entities to Mol =
N

Examples:
1. Find the Molar Mass of the compound H2SO4 (Sulfuric Acid).

# of atomic mass
Elements Product
moles/atoms (in grams)
H 2 1 2
S 1 32 32
O 4 16 64
Total 98 g/mol of H2SO4

2. How many moles are there in a

a) 48g Mg
given: mass Mg = 48g
atm mass Mg = 24 g/mol
required: n
formula: n = given mass/atomic mass
solution: 48g ÷ 24g/mol
answer: 2 mols Mg
b) 174 g NaCl?
given: mass NaCl = 174g
molar mass NaCl = 58 g/mol
Na = 1x23 = 23g
Cl = 1x35 = 35g
required: n
formula: n = given mass/M
solution: 174g ÷ 58g/mol
answer: 3 mols NaCl

2. How many atoms are there in 3 moles of Na?

given: n = 3 moles Na
N = 6.02x1023 atoms/mol
required: # of atoms of Na
formula: n x N
solution: 3 moles Na x 6.02x1023 atoms/mol
answer: 1.806 x1024 atoms

3. How many atoms are contained in 135g Al?

given: mass Al = 135g
N = 6.02x1023 atoms/mol
atomic mass of Al = 27g/mol
required: # of atoms of Al
givenmass
formula: ( )N

answer: 3.01 x1024 atoms

EXERCISES No. 1: Solve for the following and box your final answer.
1. Calculate the number of moles of Oxygen (O2) in 24g of O2 from this definition of
a mole: 1 mole = 32 g

2. If you have consumed 500g sugar (C12H22O11) in one week, how many molecules
of sugar have you consumed?

3. What is the molecular mass of the non-caloric sweetener saccharin (C7H5NO3S)?

4. How many ions are contained in 6 moles of Silver Chloride (AgCl)?

5. How many moles of Oxygen are needed to react with 8 moles of NH3?
Note: Balance first the equation:
NH3 + H2 → N2 + H2O

Then substitute the values of your coefficients to the formula below:

Mole to mole = given mole of starting substance x mole ratio
