FLEXURE THEORY

HW (I) Given the following beam:

4 3 2 1
wu = 55 [kN/m]

L1 L2 L3

a. Find step-by-step Mmax both (+/-). Use the Castigliano method.

b. Repeat exercise (a) using slope & deflection method [investigate it].
c. Repeat exercise (a) using software (e.g., ETABS, SAP2000, …)

NOTE: Working in groups. L1 = 5.0 [m], L2 = 6.2 [m] & L3 = 5.1 [m]. Section b·h (400 x 600 mm) and
modulus of elasticity Ec for sedimentary material. Value 40%.

II. The effects of alternate span loading (live loading) need to be investigated when analyzing continuous
floor/beam members. In this regard, you are asking to investigate the effects of the following load
patterns. Specifically, you should determine which one produces maximum moments (both +/-) at A, B, C
and D. In this case use the slope & deflection method. The dateline is March 1st for both (B2) and (C2)
through Moodle system at 23:30h. Use PDF to submit this HW. (Value 60%).
