3 The table shows the standard electrode potentials for two half-cell reactions.
Half-cell reaction EƟ / V
Zn2+(aq) + 2e‒ ⇌ Zn(s) ‒ 0.76
Fe2+(aq) + 2e‒ ⇌ Fe(s) ‒ 0.44
(a) Write the cell diagram for the cell formed by combining these two half-cells. (3)
(b) (i) Calculate the standard emf (E Ɵcell) of the cell formed in (a). (1)
E Ɵcell =

4 The table shows the standard electrode (redox) potentials for some half-cell reactions.
(a) Explain, using information in the table, why the reaction between Cl‒ ions and
MnO4‒ ions in acidified aqueous solution is feasible under standard conditions. (2)
(b) Iron(II) ions in aqueous solution can be oxidised to iron(III) ions by both acidified
potassium manganate(VII) and acidified potassium dichromate(VI).
(i) Write a balanced ionic equation, including state symbols, for the reaction
between iron(II) ions and acidified potassium dichromate(VI). (2)

(ii) State why dilute hydrochloric acid is not used in the reaction between iron(II)
ions and potassium manganate(VII). (1)
5 The table shows the standard electrode potentials for three half-cell reactions.
Half-cell reaction EƟ / V
H+(aq) + e‒ ⇌ ½H2(g) 0.00
Ni2+(aq) + 2e‒ ⇌ Ni(s) ‒ 0.25
Fe2+(aq) + 2e‒ ⇌ Fe(s) ‒ 0.44
(a) The first stage of the rusting of iron involves the process
Fe(s) Fe2+(aq) + 2e‒
Explain whether you would expect iron to rust in the situation shown in the diagram. (2)
