THE ENGINEER AT WORK

ENGINEERING TRAINING

❑ BOTH EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE ARE VALUELESS IN PRACTICAL LIFE

UNLESS THAY CAN BE INTELLIGENTLY APPLIED TO USEFUL ENDS.

❑ EDUCATION GIVES OPPORTUNITY TO SECURE SUBORDINATE EMPLOYMENT

AND TO ACQUIRE AND DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO FILL SATISFACTORILY
HIGHER POSITIONS WHICH MAY BE OPEN.

❑ INTELLIGENT OBSERVATION, CLOSE APPLICATION AND A HARD STUDY WILL

FIT FOR HIGHER POSITION.

❑ FAILURE TO ADVANCE IS OFTEN LARGELY DUE TO DISSATISFACTION IN

SUBORDINATE POSITION.
CONSIDERATIONS

❑ CONNECTED TO THE JOB:

❑ THE MANNER IN WHICH THE JOB FITS THE OVER-ALL PROFESSIONAL AIMS.
❑ PERSONAL DESIRES OF THE INDIVIDUAL.

❑ NOT DIRECTLY CONNECTED WITH THE JOB WHICH MATERIALLY AFFECT THE
OVER-ALL SATISFACTION:
❑ THE DESIRE AND PREFERENCES OF THE INDIVIDUAL’S FAMILY AS WELL AS HIS OWN.
❑ THE GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OF THE WORK.
❑ THE AMOUNT OF TRAVEL (IF ANY) REQUIRED.

ENERGY AND ABILITY.

❑ THE RETENTION OF A POSITION BY INFLUENCE DWARFS

CHARACTER, UNDERMINES ABILITY, WEAKENS CONSCIENCE,
AND DESTROYS INITIATIVE AND PERSONAL REPUTATION.
SELECTING EMPLOYMENT
❑ SHOULD BE BASED ON PERSONAL PREFERENCE AND
PERSONAL FITNESS, APTITUDES, AND ABILITIES.

❑ FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES MAY OCCASIONALY MAKE A

DIFFERENT COURSE ESSENTIALY, AND IN SUCH CASES THE
EMPLOYEE SHOULD ENDEAVOR TO INSTILL INTO HIS WORK
THE ENTHUSIASM AND INTEREST REQUIRED FOR HIS SUCCESS.
CONTINUOUS EFFORT TO THIS END WILL NORMALLY CREATE
CONDITIONS OF SATISFACTION QUITE EQUAL TO THOSE
WHICH WOULD RESULT IF HE WERE ABLE TO PURSUE THE LINE
TO WHICH HIS EARLY INCLINATIONS LED.
THE FIRST JOB

❑ THE FIRST WORK SHOULD BE HARD AND EXCTING SO THAT

STRENUOUS EFFORT AND CONCENTRATION MAY BECOME A
HABIT.

❑ THE FUTURE OF THE EMPLOYEE LARGELY DEPENDS ON

FITNESS TO FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION,
INTERESTED IN THE WORK, IF THE EMPLOYEE IS ABLE,
ACCURATE, CONSCIENTIOUS, DEPENDABLE AND LOYAL.

❑ EMPLOYEE WITH MARKED CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS
