modernity. Contemporary life in Verkhnemarkovo is characterized by so-called infrastructural
violence, which results from the lack of state support-or false promises made by the state-and relates
to good transport infrastructure. She’ll discuss the Foundation’s approach to supporting anthropology
worldwide, offer tips on succeeding in the competition for Dissertation Fieldwork and Post-PhD
Research Grants, and describe some of the Foundation’s new initiatives. Though this pottery was

Showcasing the collective work of ten experienced scholars in the field, the book goes beyond
concepts of tradition that have often been the focus of previous research, to explain how political,
economic and technological changes in Russia have created a wide range of new possibilities and
constraints in the pursuit of different ways of life. This is only a one-page summarized listing of the
scholarship programs gathered from many sources. Following the end of the Soviet Union, many of
these towns on the industrial margins suffered from a drastic reduction in government support and a
collapse of manufactures. I study these entanglements by focusing on a village in the Priangar’e
region of Siberia. There is no limit to the duration of the grant, and applicants may request funding to

share a history of working and living along the BAM and constitute the majority population in the
region. This article critiques the way in which Soviet ruins are imagined as archaeological relics of a
long-gone polity by examining the recent political processes that have generated infrastructural
obsolescence long after the Soviet collapse. As we acknowledge the limits of industrial progress and
growth-based capital, places for where the dream is now over, and whose inhabitants are finding
ways of living through its transition, offer emergent practical ontologies based on maintenance,
