NAME: _________________________ SCORE:_______

Subject Area: SPM 10 PRECAL

Topic: Real life applications of the sine law and Cosine Law
Learning Competencies:
 Apply the steps in solving verbal/word problems in the following oblique triangles using the sine law and
cosine law.
POINTS TO REMEMBER
Sine law:
- For problems where one side and 2 angles are given use the following:
bsin A asin B asinC
a= b= c=
sin B sinA sin A
csin A csin B bsinC
a= b= c=
sin C sin C sin B
- For problems where 2 sides and the angle opposite one of them is given:
asin B bsin A csin A
A = sin- 1 ( ¿ B = sin-1 ( ¿ C = sin-1 ( ¿
b a a
asinC bsinC csin B
A = sin- 1 ( ¿ B = sin- 1 ( ¿ C = sin- 1 ( ¿
c c b

Cosine law:
2 sides and included angle is given;
a = √ b2 +c 2−2 bccos A
b = √ a2 +c 2−2 accos B
c = √ a2 +b 2−2 abcos C
3 sides are given;
2 2
b +c −a ²
A = cos-1( ¿
2 bc
2 2
a +c −b ²
B = cos-1( ¿
2 ac
2
a+b −c ²
C = cos-1( ¿
2 ab

For the following activities:

1. Draw a triangular representation of the given problem and label it properly, it will help in
determining what formula is to be used.
2. Every correct drawing is worth an additional 2 points to the score

Activity 1. HARD, HARDER, DIAMOND GRADE!!!

1. Find the lengths of the diagonals of a parallelogram having one angle of 71° and adjacent sides of 20
and 30 inches.
2. The length of the legs of a step ladder are 12 feet long, if the angle formed between the legs is 32°, how
far apart are its legs?
3. The sides of a parallelogram are 4 and 6 cm. one angle is 58° and another is 100°. Find the lengths of
the diagonals.
4. The base of a triangle is 165 ft. long, the angles at the base are 46° and 130°. Find the other 2 sides.
5. A lagoon in the shape of a triangle is constructed. The 2 angles are 49° 15′ and 78° 22′ and their
included side is 5 meters log, what is the perimeter of the lagoon?
6. The bases of a trapezoid are 12 and 22 inches, the angles at the extremities of one base are 66° and
49°, find the length of the legs of the trapezoid.
7. One diagonal of a parallelogram is 16.5 cm. it makes angles of 36° 10′ and 14° 30′with the sides. find
the length of the sides.
8. The longer diagonal of the parallelogram is 10 inches long, it makes angles of 33° and 25° with the
sides. find the length of the sides and the shorter diagonal.
9. Island A is 5 miles from island C and 6 miles from island B, if island B is 7 miles from island C to form
an oblique triangle. Find the angles between the islands.
10. Find the angles of a parallelogram whose sides are 425 cm and 342 cm and the longer diagonal
measures 684 cm.
