tionality. See G02.04 — SAM Cab for more information.

501 — General Information

Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) is an optional fuel savings application that adjusts the vehicle speed based on
the approaching road profile. The system allows the vehicle to vary from the set cruise speed by up to 6% de-
pending on the approaching road grade.
Using 3D digital map technology and GPS, Predictive Cruise Control evaluates the upcoming road grade 1.25
miles (2000 meters) in advance to determine the most fuel efficient vehicle speed. The 3D digital map database
contains road profile information for over 200,000 highway miles in the 48 contiguous United States, including all
Interstate and many major US highways.
Driver interaction of Predictive Cruise Control is the same as conventional cruise control using existing cruise
control switches. It runs in the background with no interaction required from the driver. In the event of a Predic-
tive Cruise Control fault or when driving on a road with no profile information available in the 3D digital map
database, the system reverts to conventional cruise control. The cruise control operation will continue "normally"
with the cruise control speed going smoothly back to the drivers set speed.
The Predictive Cruise Control system consists of an electronic controller with GPS and a digital map database
and a GPS antenna. The controller interacts with the CPC using proprietary J1939 messages to control vehicle
speed and monitor parameter information.
Predictive Cruise Control status is displayed on an LCD display contained in a 2-inch (50-mm) diameter gauge
located on the auxiliary dash panel if the instrument cluster is the ICU3, or is integrated into the ICU4Me with no
secondary gauge.

Refer to module 149 for applicable wiring drawings.

701 — Diagnostic Tests

Verify that the batteries are fully charged, all ECU connectors and connector locks are securely fastened (espe-
cially at the PCC module itself) and that SAM Cab fuse F18 has continuity. Also remove the backshell from
Connector J2 at the PCC module and verify wire integrity.
1. Connect the communication adaptor to the vehicle diagnostic adaptor.
2. Connect to the vehicle to ServiceLink using J1939.
3. Review the "General Info" screen for missing ECUs.
4. Load the "Fault" screen, and review the list for active faults.
5. Verify that the CPC is correctly enabled for Predictive Cruise Control using DDRS and the PCC Diagnostics
tool inside the "Actions" menu.

702 — PCC Message Not Received (SA 0, SPN 524287, FMI 9)

When the CPC CC_Mode_Selection parameter is set with Predictive Cruise Control enabled, the CPC expects
to receive messages from the PCC module when the ignition switch is in the ON position. If messages are not
received for approximately 1 minute, the CPC will activate this fault.
1. Disconnect connector J2 at the PCC module and with the ignition switch in the ON position, check for
power as follows:
• Ignition power on pin L1. This circuit is sourced through dash splice pack circuit 81C.
• Battery power on pin M2. This circuit is sourced through the SAM Cab fuse F18.
• Ground on pin M1
Repair any wiring faults found then clear fault codes. Otherwise continue troubleshooting.
2. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Measure the resistance of the J1939 datalink at the PCC module connector J2
on pins H1 and H2. Compare the resistance to the following and repair the databus as appropriate.
• 60 ± 6 : The J1939 wiring is intact and both terminating resistors are installed.
• 120 ± 12 : There is a terminating resistor missing. Check the resistance across the terminating re-
sistors.
• 40 ± 4 : There is a third terminating resistor installed on the datalink. One terminating must be re-
moved. There should be one terminating resistor on each end of the backbone for a total of two.

C08.02/6 Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, September 2014

Predictive Cruise Control C08.02

• 0-5 : There is a short between J1939+ and J1939– somewhere on the datalink.
• 1000 or greater: There is an open circuit between the J1939 connector on the PCC module and the
J1939 backbone or both terminating resistors are missing or open. Once the correct voltages and pa-
rameters are verified, the backbone resistance at the PCC module is correct, and the CPC is updated
per the instructions in 703 — PCC Erratic Data Error (SA 0, SPN 524287, FMI 19), clear all active
faults. If the FMI fault code remains active after restarting the system, replace the PCC module.

703 — PCC Erratic Data Error (SA 0, SPN 524287, FMI 19)
When the CPC CC_Mode_Selection parameter is set with Predictive Cruise Control enabled, the CPC uses in-
formation from the PCC module when the ignition switch is in the ON position.
The CPC will also set this fault when the last 3 messages from the PCC module within a 300ms period are not
contiguous or if the PCC status 1 message is not received within 300ms.
This fault could also be set at vehicle startup, because the CPC reports the fault before the PCC performs the
initial boot up sequence. When this fault is present on EPA10 vehicles, verify power, ground, and backbone by
following steps 1 and 2 in 702 — PCC Message Not Received (SA 0, SPN 524287, FMI 9), then complete the
following procedure. If this fault is not present on an EPA13 vehicle, skip this procedure and instead verify that pa-
rameters and voltages are correct, that backbone resistance at the PCC module is correct, and that the CPC has
been updated, then clear all active faults. If FMI 19 remains active after restarting system, replace PCC module.
1. Using DDRS, verify that the CPC is parameterized correctly to enable Predictive Cruise Control. If not, use
the PCC diagnostic tool to correct the parameters.
2. Download the engine serial number (ESN) and choose "Update Device Software" using DDRS. The system
will show no update needed, however an update is required to ensure a proprietary parameter is loaded to
the system.
3. Clear any active faults and restart system.
4. Verify that parameters and voltages are correct, that backbone resistance at the PCC module is correct,
and that the CPC has been updated, then clear all active faults. If FMI 19 remains active after restarting
system, replace PCC module.

704 — CPC Timeout (SA 17, SPN 639, FMI 2)

When the PCC module fails to receive a message from the CPC, it broadcasts this fault. Clear the code and
restart the system. If the fault remains active, troubleshoot the CPC.

705 — No GPS Data (SA 17, SPN 841 FMI 2)

When the PCC module does not receive a GPS signal for more than 100 seconds, it can broadcast this fault. It
can also broadcast this fault if the integrity of the wiring harness between the GPS sensor and the PCC module
becomes compromised.
1. Remove the connector from the GPS Sensor.
2. With the key in the ON position, measure the voltage at terminals 1 and 2 at the GPS harness.
3. If 5V is not measured, check the following connector pairs for continuity.
• PCC J2-M4 – GPS terminal 1 for circuit 250XV
• PCC J2-L3 – GPS terminal 2 for circuit 250 XG

Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, September 2014 C08.02/7

C08.02 Predictive Cruise Control

4. Measure the voltage at terminal J2-M4 at the PCC module, If 5V is not measured, replace the PCC module.
5. If 5V is measured at the PCC module, perform a continuity test on the serial connection for the GPS sensor
at the following terminal pairs.
• PCC J2-A3 – GPS terminal 3 for circuit 250XR
• PCC J2-B3 – GPS terminal 4 for circuit 250XT
6. Repair as required.
7. Check ServiceLink for active fault codes. If any are active correct them. If there are no active faults, clear
the historic faults and restart the system.
8. If all previous steps have been performed and the fault remains active, replace the GPS antenna.

706 — Incorrect GPS Firmware, EPA 2013 and Newer Only (SA 17, SPN
841, FMI 13)
When an EPA13 or newer vehicle is equipped with predictive cruise control, it will verify that it has the correct
firmware version on the GPS antenna. If it does not have the correct firmware, it will broadcast this fault. The
GPS antenna needs to be replaced in this case. There are two locations for the GPS antenna, depending on ve-
hicle configuration.
