500 — Terms and Abbreviations

CAN—Controller Area Network
CAN ID—The identifier for a specific message, which also contains the source address of the sending ECU
communicating on the J1939 datalink.
FMI—Failure Mode Indicator. The part of a J1587, J1939, and CAN fault code that identifies how part of a de-
vice, or item on a device, failed.
SA—Source Address; indicates numeric assignment for a device that communicates on J1939.
SAM Cab—Signal Detect and Actuation Module Cab ("SAM Cabin"); this ECU controls mainly cab-related func-
tionality. See G02.04 — SAM Cab for more information.

501 — General Information

The cigar lighter outlet provides 12V power to any device connected to it. The SAM Cab provides 12V power to
six power receptacles. Two 12V power receptacles (called power receptacle 1 and 2) are located in the dash.
Power receptacle 1 is the cigar power receptacle, and power receptacle 2 is the phone power receptacle. These
receptacles are fused and receive their power from the SAM Cab.
Four more power receptacles (3 through 6) are offered as optional 12V power output in the sleeper section of
the cab. Receptacle power is available regardless of the ignition switch position.
The location of power receptacles 3-6 depend on the configuration of the vehicle.
The following power receptacles are designed as house loads in the power management feature:
• Power receptacle 1 – Dash
• Power receptacle 2 – Dash
• Power receptacle 3 – driver side cabinet
The following power receptacles are designated as comfort loads in the power management feature:
• Power receptacle 4 - Passenger side cabinet
• Power receptacle 5A – Passenger side cabinet
• Power receptacle 5B – Driver side cabinet
• Power receptacle 5C – Driver side cabinet
• Power receptacle 6A – Forward bunk partition
• Power receptacle 6B – Forward bunk partition
Refer to 600 — Component Locations for more information.

502 — Powernet Management

The powernet management feature protects the batteries from discharging too much by temporarily shutting
down loads from the power supply. This ensures that in the event of a drop in voltage, the battery draining
process is slowed.
Refer to C06.09 — Powernet Management for more information.

blown fuse at F30.
Action: Check F30 for voltage on both side of the fuse. If the voltage is low at connector X14, pin 2, disconnect the wire at
connector X14, pin 2 and test for operating voltage at the SAM Cab pin. After disconnecting this wire, if the ignition voltage
returns to operating level trace the short to GND or the reason for the excessive current draw. Refer to G02.04 — SAM
Cab, 708 — Logic Controlled Relayed Fused Outputs for a generic troubleshooting procedure for that pin type.

702 — Output Troubleshooting

NOTE: There are no inputs on the cab power receptacles to troubleshoot.
Before performing the following tests, make sure the outputs are not being controlled by the powernet
management progressive low voltage disconnect (PLVD) feature. Ensure that the batteries are fully
charged. Use the template "Cab Power Receptacles" in ServiceLink to monitor PLVD and receptacle
status.
1. Measure the output voltage for the suspect power receptacle.
Insert a multimeter into the contacts of the power receptacle, remove the receptacle and measure directly
off of the connector terminals.
Does the multimeter read system BAT voltage?
YES! Check the connector on the power receptacle and the ECU connector on the SAM Cab to determine if
the problem is intermittent.
NO ! Go to test 2.
2. Verify ECU output.
Verify the output of the SAM Cab by measuring the SAM Cab terminal for the affected power receptacle.
Use Table 7 and the associated G06 drawing to locate the appropriate receptacle. Use a multimeter to
measure the voltage across the positive and negative terminal.

Is there a low resistance?

YES !Reconnect the power receptacle connectors and the SAM Cab connector. Evaluate functionality to
determine if the problem is intermittent. Using Datalink Monitor Template "Cab Power Receptacles", verify
the SAM Cab is broadcasting the datalink message to activate the power receptacles.
NO ! Repair the affected harness.
4. Check the fuse for the corresponding pin that is not reading 12V.
Refer to Table 9, and locate the pin that is measuring 0V.
Is there a blown fuse?
YES! Replace the bad fuse.
NO ! Perform a functional test to determine if the problem is intermittent. Verify the relay associated with
the circuit is functioning properly. Replace the relay as necessary.
