    Giving Clarification

    Is that clear? Are you with me?

    Do you know what I mean? (inf) Am I making sense?

    Do you follow what I’m saying? Let me clarify…

    What I’m trying to say is… What I really mean is…

    Let me explain. In other words…

    Giving examples

    Let me give you an example, For example / instance…

    Asking for clarification

    Could you explain that in more detail? What do you mean by X / that?
    Could you go over X again, please? Could you tell me more about X?
    I don’t get what you mean by X. (inf) I didn’t quite follow you.
    I’m not sure I understand what you mean. Sorry I’m lost. (inf)
    Sorry, I don’t follow. I’m afraid that’s not quite clear.
    Could you give an example of what you mean? What are you getting at? (inf)

    Clarifying misunderstandings

    What I mean is…

    I’d like to go back to what I was saying earlier…

    What I said was…

    Let me add something to what I said before….

    What I was trying to say was…..

    It’s not quite that simple. Perhaps an example will help. (ac)
