STADIUM LIGHTS
Stadium lights are high-powered luminaires
designed to illuminate sports arenas and venues.
Mounted at great heights, often ranging from 40
to over 100 feet, these lights possess narrow
beam angles from 12 to 60 degrees to achieve
intense brightness and long-distance reach. This
specialized lighting is crucial for outdoor and
indoor sports facilities to maintain excellent
visibility during nighttime or dim conditions.

METAL HALIDE LIGHTS

Metal halides are compounds formed when

metal and halogen elements combine. They
include things like sodium chloride (salt) and
uranium hexafluoride (the fuel used in nuclear
energy reactors). Metal halide lamps produce
light by passing an electric current through a
combination of mercury and metal halide gas.
They function very similarly to other gas-
discharge lamps (e.g. mercury vapor) - the
principal difference being the composition of
the gas. The introduction of metal halide
vapor generally improves both the efficiency
and the quality of the light.

STADIUM LIGHTING 5
• Metal halide lights have the longest warm-up period of any light on the market. Many
metal halide lamps used in warehouses and sports facilities take 15-20 minutes just to
reach their normal operating temperature.
• Metal halide lights get less efficient when run at less than full operating power
• Metal halide lights are omnidirectional. Omnidirectional lights produce light in 360
degrees. This is a large system inefficiency because at least half of the light needs to be
reflected and redirected to the desired area being illuminated.

Where are Metal Halide Lights Commonly Used?

Common applications for metal halide lighting includes large sport facilities like stadiums or
hockey rinks as well as high bay lighting for warehouses and large indoor spaces.

STADIUM LIGHTING 6
HALOGEN LIGHTS

Halogen reflectors are often preferred for

directed lighting such as spotlights and
floodlights. They are also increasingly being
used as a more efficient alternative to
incandescent reflectors.

Halogen light naturally burns at 3000K, which

is slighter “whiter” in color temperature than
incandescent bulbs which burn at 2700K. One
of the benefits LEDs is they are available in
many color temperatures, ranging from 1800K
to 6500K.

STADIUM LIGHTING 7
METAL HALIDE LIGHT
A metal-halide lamp is an electrical lamp that
produces light by an electric arc through a
gaseous mixture of vaporized mercury and
metal halides. Metal Halide lights are 3-5
times more efficient and produce a much
higher quality light.

In many cases, and depending on the

particular mix of metal halides, they have a
very high color temperature (up to 5500K).
This means that metal halide bulbs can be
very useful for high intensity applications like
vehicle headlamps, athletic facility
illumination, or photographic lighting.

LED STADIUM LIGHTING
LED stadium lighting is a type of sports lighting
that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the
light source. LEDs are more energy-efficient,
durable, and versatile than other types of
lights, such as metal halide or high-pressure
sodium lights. LED stadium lighting can
provide high-quality illumination for various
sports venues, both indoor and outdoor, such
as

• Outdoor football stadiums

• Tennis courts
• Baseball fields
• Indoor basketball court
• Golf courses

ADVANTAGES OF LED STADIUM LIGHTS

In addition to the major advantages, LED lights also offer several smaller perks. These include
the following:

1.Accessories: LEDs require far fewer accessory lamp parts.

2.Color: LEDs can be designed to generate the entire spectrum of visible light colors without
having to use the traditional color filters required by traditional lighting solutions.
3.Directional: LEDs are naturally directional (they emit light for 180 degrees by default).
4.Size: LEDs can be much smaller than other lights (even incandescent).
5.Warm-Up: LEDs have faster switching (no warm-up or cool-down period)

• Cricket field lighting is divided into indoor
cricket field lighting and outdoor cricket field
lighting. Different lighting Installation in
different places. Lighting standard according
to the cricket field to use a function to
determine the standard of illumination.

• The cricket stadium lighting system needs to

be divided into three levels of non-televised
training, non-televised match, high-
definition televised match, and the
appropriate conversion system needs to be
installed.

LIGHTING STANDARDS FOR FOOTBALL STADIUM

The lighting standard should be determined according to the function of football field. It can be divided
into seven levels:

• 200lx for training and entertainment activities,

• 500lx for amateur games,
• 750lx for professional games,
• 1000lx for general TV broadcast,
• 1400lx for high-definition TV broadcast for large
international games,
• and 750lx for TV emergency.

What are the Balancing vertical and horizontal illumination
technical aspects to level: The main purpose of the international level sports
look for in a good lighting system is to provide both vertical and horizontal
illumination levels with a perfect balance suitable
sports lighting for HDTV transmission. It is important that the lights
project? don’t hurt the eyes of the players, referees, and
spectators and at the same time provide enough spill
light for a great viewing experience.

Uniformity of illuminance: Uniform illuminance on the

turf helps the players perform better during the event. It
is also essential for high quality TV transmission while
panning the camera from one side to the other.

Position of mast for outdoor stadium: The mast

position should adhere to various international sports
guidelines, keeping in mind the “Forbidden Zone / No
Floodlight Zone”.

23
Selection of beam in design: It is important to select the correct
beam for good quality lighting. A designer who has experience in
this field, can help you select the right beam for your event.

Height of mast: Choosing a mast of the right height is very

important for outdoor stadium lighting. It ensures comfortable
viewing environment on FOP area by reducing glare, balances
both horizontal and vertical illuminance level, and provides high
quality uniformity level.

Switching: To optimize utilization and conserve energy, flexibility

of switching is suggested for lower level matches like national,
club, practice etc. Suitable luminosity is recommended for
respective events.

Control on light pollution: As defined by the International

Standards, spill light outside the stadium boundaries should be
kept to bare minimum.
