Mainframe and z/OS Overview Mainframe, also called as Central Computer, is a computer offering high processing power.

A central computer operates on a centralized model, unlike the distributed models. It can simultaneously run multiple sessions of an operating system or even different operating systems. The largest companies among manufactures of Mainframes are the likes of Bull (with DPS / 6 to DPS / 8 subsystem GCOS ), EMC Computers, IBM with zSeries (usually with system z / OS - formerly MVS or VSE and more recently Linux) and iSeries, and Unisys. In 1965, IBM introduced more mainframe computers range 360 and IBM 370, and became the leading manufacturer of the Mainframes. The term mainframe has been more associated with IBM and with System zEnterprise as latest its latest incarnation IBM has surpassed anyone else in the market. Mainframe is a leading technology used by very large firms in various industry sectors Banking Finance Services and Insurance (BFSI), Airlines, Retail, Media. Because of the reliability and power, Mainframe has been the only choice capable of meeting the needs of users (processing of very large databases accessed by tens and hundreds of thousands of users all at the same time). z/OS Overview: The Operating System with Zero (minimum) downtime are called z/OS. z/OS was first introduced in 1960 and changed its name several times (depending on version) over the years. Chronologically, MFT (Multiprogramming with a Fixed number of Tasks), MVT (Multiprogramming with a Variable number of Tasks), SVS (Single Virtual Storage), MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage), MVS/370, MVS / XA (Extended Architecture), MVS / ESA (Enterprise Systems Architecture), OS/390 and since 1960 its z/OS. One of the most advanced and widely used mainframe operating system, z/OS is designed to offer stability and uncrackable security. z/OS is designed for mainframe computers 64-bit zSeries by IBM, and now is one of the most advanced arsenal in most of the fortune companys IT Infrastructure. The z/OS file system, inherited from MVS , manages files with a catalog system, and not in a hierarchical manner, with no directory or file trees. Files are identified by their dsn (Data Set Name). A dsn consists of multiple qualifiers (up to 8 characters in length) connected by a point, the first (alias) is usually used to refer to the reference catalog. It can be completed by the second and the third is called Multi Level Alias . On the other hand, the Unix file trees are supported by UNIX System Services, which is actually based on a particular MVS file system ( HFS or ZFS ). z/OS uses the EBCDIC Coding (Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code) .
