Iconic Marilyn Monroe dress sold at auction for $500,000

By Daily Mail Reporter

She called it her worst-ever movie. But even in the film she considered her greatest failure, Marilyn Monroe was as spectacular as ever. Now the iconic dress the silver screen star wore in 'River of No Return' has sold to a private buyer for $504,000. Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions, said Saturday that the dress was sold at an auction in China. Monroe wore the green velour dress while she sang 'I'm Gonna File My Claim' in the 1954 Western in which she portrayed Kay Washington, a gambler's wife.

San Francisco Bay Area realty investors to plead guilty to bid rigging, mail fraud
Eli Segall-Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal

Several Bay Area real estate investors have agreed to plead guilty for conspiring to rig bids and commit mail fraud at foreclosure auctions, the U.S. Department of Justice said. The investors named include Silicon Valley residents Gary Anderson of Saratoga and Troy Kent of San Mateo. The government said six other people plan to plead guilty: Patrick Campion of San Francisco; James Doherty of Hillsborough; Keith Goodman of San Francisco; Craig Lipton of San Francisco; Henry Pessah of Burlingame; and Laith Salma of San Francisco. Charges were filed against the eight investors in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the department said. According to the charges, the investors conspired to rig bids by agreeing not bid against each other at public fore closure auctions in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. According to the department, the in vestors conspired

mainly to suppress and restrain competition and conceal payoffs in order to obtain certain real estate offered at the auctions. The investors were also charged with conspiracies to use the mail to carry out a fraudulent scheme to make payoffs to obtain title for certain properties, as well as to receive payoffs and divert money to co-conspirators, the department said. The conspiracy took place over various lengths of time between November 2008 and January 2011, the department said. Three of the investors participated in the conspiracy in San Francisco. Anderson, Kent and three other investors were involved in San Mateo County, the Justice Department said. The Justice Department noted that when real estate is sold at a foreclosure auction, the proceeds are used to pay off the mortgage and other debt attached to the property. The remaining proceeds, if any exist, are paid to the homeowner.

The film, in which Robert Mitchum starred alongside Monroe, follows the fortunes of a gunslinger released from jail and trying to start a new life with his 10-year-old son. It's production was marred by conflict between the director, Otto Preminger, and Monroe's acting coach, Natasha Lytess, who insisted the blonde bombshell enunciate every single syllable of the script with exaggerated emphasis. Preminger's experience on the film convinced him he never wanted to work for a studio again, and he left for Europe before the post-production was complete. The film received a lukewarm reception from the critics, who in the main agreed that the best thing about it was Monroe's screen presence. Bosely Crowther wrote of it in the New York Times: 'The raft tumbling through these rapids is quite a sight to see. And layouts of Rocky Mountain landscapes are handsome in color, too. 'But Mr. Mitchum's and the audience's attention is directed to Miss Monroe through frequent and liberal posing of her in full and significant views Among other items that were sold at the auction were the bustier that Madonna wore during her 'Who's That Girl' tour in 1987. It has sold for $72,000. The famous white dress Monroe wore in 'The Seven Year Itch' was sold for $4.6 million at an auction this summer.

John Wayne auction fetches more than $5M

More than 700 costumes, scripts, awards and memorabilia from the estate of legendary film star John Wayne brought more than $5.38 million during a two-day event hosted by Heritage Auctions (HA.com ), in conjunction with John Wayne Enterprises, with dozens of items bringing at least two-to-three times their pre-auction estimates. The auction was held at the Hyatt Century Plaza in Los Angeles, and online, on Oct. 6-7, 2011. All prices realized quoted above include a 19.5% percent buyers premium and represents the actual, full price being paid by the winner bidders for the items. Top items included the signature green wool beret worn by Wayne in the notable film The Green Berets, which realized $179,250; his Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role in the 1969 film, True Grit, realized $143,400; the cowboy hat from two of Waynes films, Big Jake and The Cowboys brought in $119,500; Waynes last Drivers License brought a record price for a permanent Drivers License when it realized $89,625 and Waynes iconic eye patch from the Academy Award winning film True Grit sold for $47,800. More than 2,600 fans submitted bids either in person or online from around the world. This was all about my fathers fans, said Ethan Wayne, son of the legendary actor and President of John Wayne Enterprises. It was important to our family to give his thousands of admirers the chance to own a piece of my fathers legacy. He loved his fans almost as much as his family, and now they will always have something to remember him by. All the items were carefully preserved by Waynes family for the past 32 years, and that care has certainly paid off, continued Rohan. The prices realized show just how beloved John Wayne remains today. They also show that iconic Hollywood memorabilia items continue to sell regardless of the state of the economy. Wayne was nominated three times for the Academy Award, winning the Oscar for Best Actor in 1969 for True Grit. In a recent Harris Poll listing of Americas favorite movie stars, John Wayne ranks third, and has never been out of the top 10 since the polls inception. Other highlights of the auction include, but certainly are not limited to: A Nudies Cowboy Hat from Rooster Cogburn: Universal, 1975. Made of black felt, elaborate braided brown leather and twine hatband, leather twine chin strap, inside stamped Nudies / Rodeo Tailors / North Hollywood / California, inside crown reads Resistol Self-Conforming Western, worn as Wayne portrayed the title character in the film that co-starred Katharine Hepburn. Realized: $77,675. A Holster and Gun Belt from El Dorado: Paramount, 1966. Both made of brown leather, belt with thirty cartridge loops and a silver metal square-shaped buckle, twine detailing on both holster and belt, with evident heavy wear; likely worn in other films as well. Realized: $77,675. An Eye Patch from True Grit: Paramount Pictures, 1969. Made of black leather with fine wire mesh covering a cut-out hole; makeup residue still evident on inside patch; one of many worn by Wayne throughout the film as he portrayed the iconic character, Rooster Cogburn. According to Luster Bayless [Wayne's longtime costumer] in the 1996 book, Duke, Were Glad We Knew You by Herb Fagen, Duke needed a fresh (eye) patch every day. Each morning hed check the thing to see if there was any makeup inside it. Realized: $47,800.

Original 1942 Jerry Robinson artwork from Detective Comics #67 goes to auction

Answers To This Weeks Puzzle

Auction News

The original 1942 Jerry Robinson artwork from Detective Comics #67, one of the earliest Batman covers still known to exist consigned by the legendary Golden Age artist himself is being offered for the very first time at auction and is expected to bring $300,000+ when it comes across the block on Nov. 15 as part of Heritage Auctions Vintage Comics & Comic Art Signature(r) Auction in Beverly Hills. The cover art is one of three Treasures from the Robinson Collection being offered in the auction, all of which have been tucked away in Jerry Robinsons personal collection for almost 70 years. The amazing Detective Comics #67 artwork is a classic piece of Pop Culture, representing the very first Batman comic to feature Supervillain The Penguin on its cover. On it, Penguin rides an ostrich as he flees the Dynamic Duo, mocking their seemingly fruitless pursuit as he bolts. Robinson penciled and inked this cover and the detail of his art is amazing close-up, said Todd Hignite, Consignment Director for Comic Art at Heritage, particularly his shading lines on Batman and Robin, and on the feathery details of the ostrich being straddled by that bird-of-prey, the Penguin. This Golden Age masterpiece ranks right up there with the best of them! The other two treasures from The Jerry Robinson Collection offered here also represent some of the greatest original Golden Age cover art, and Golden Age names, that Heritage has ever offered: the legendary duo Jack Kirby and Joe

Simons Adventure Comics #73 Manhunter Cover Original Art, DC, 1942 (Estimate: $150,000+) and Fred Rays Action Comics #46 Superman Cover Original Art, DC, 1942 (Estimate:$100,000+), one of the few early Superman covers that has surfaced and an absolute classic. Robinson is one of the most influential figures in the cartoon arts to ever live. As a member of the original Batman team he was responsible for the first and most iconic of all supervillains, the Joker, and co-created Robin, the archetypal sidekick. From the earliest days of the Golden Age of comic books, Robinson created characters such as London, Atoman and Jet Scott, said Jaster, and worked in many genres notably editorial cartooning, newspaper strips and illustration. In his other influential careers Robinson has been a features syndicate founder, teacher, curator and champion of artists rights. Among Robinsons 30 published works is The Comics: An Illustrated History of Comic Strip Art (Dark Horse), a definitive study of the genre. His other books include the biography Skippy and Percy Crosby (Holt), The 1970s: Best Political Cartoons of the Decade (McGraw Hill), and most recently a twovolume set of his 1950s sci-fi strip, Jet Scott (Dark Horse). The biography Jerry Robinson: Ambassador of Comics (Abrams) was published in 2010. Robinsons numerous honors include the National Cartoonists Society Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award and the San Diego Comic-Con Eisner Hall of Fame.
