PERSONAL CARE AND SAFETY

In this activity, you will look into the things that you listed under the things that
you cannot live without (based on the previous activity). These things can be
considered important for you because these are part of your personal care and safety.

As mentioned, it is very important to protect your personal and private

information in social media as you use this as network of friends, family, school, and
community. The responsible use of social media would help you and the lives of others
safer and more meaningful.

Touching Rule

There are certain situations that you must know that it’s okay to say “NO” and
move away from that situation or find an adult or older sibling to talk to about feelings,
fears, and concerns.

In a statement, the DepEd said the program is age-appropriate,

developmental, and culture-sensitive, and in response to R.A. 10354,
the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law of 2012. “As
early as Grade 1, learners are taught about ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch,’
which helps them avoid becoming victims of other people’s unwanted
behaviors,” it said. Also, Dr. Rosalie Masilang, DepEd Adolescent
Reproductive Health Focal Person and Supervising Education Program
Specialist, said young children are most vulnerable to abuse and
exploitation. “Sinasabi natin sa mga bata na may karapatan silang
tumangging magpahawak sa kanilang katawan. Dapat alam ng bata
yung hawak na walang malisya at may malisya,” she said.

Here, you will look into the ways of personal care and safety. Taking care of
self is the most important thing to do especially during this time of the pandemic.
Recognizing the need for self-care, understanding the significance of online safety,
and knowing the basic tips of personal safety means to protect oneself from viruses,
sickness, and dangers and if someone tries to break the touching rule you should: 1)
Say no; 2) Walk away; and 3) Tell an adult right away.

You should learn to say that “My body is my own.” You must be aware when to
report if inappropriate physical contact and other abuses happens. Know that it is okay
to ask someone to stop doing something that makes you uncomfortable. (For example,

Downloaded by Jennylou Antonio (jenylou.antonio@deped.gov.ph)

lOMoARcPSD|37494730

“Stop I do not like this” - to an uncle who might be giving bear hugs). Your bodies -
boys and girls are different and change over time, and you should learn to accept
these differences and respect them.

Trust is a key factor when it comes to child protection and so is whom to trust.
You should be able to recognize when you feel safe/unsafe and act on it (example, "I
do not like this… I am afraid"). Also, it is vital for you to know that certain body parts
are private parts and need to be protected (Example, “My Mama said that I must
change my clothes privately”). And lastly, but most importantly, the importance of
consent: you should know that asking permission is a must, even if he or she is a
friend.

Learning a skill to identify good from bad touch will help you protect yourself
from any harm or danger. With your knowledge and skills, you can influence other
learners to do the right things to protect themselves as well. With this, you are now an
advocate of a safe community.

Internet Safety

Another safety precaution is using the internet while doing your online class
or online learning modality. Here are some rules that must know:

1. Do not to give out any personal information such as your address, telephone
number, parents’ work address/telephone number without your parents’
permission.

2. Tell your parents right away if you come across something that makes you
feel uncomfortable.

3. Do not agree to get together with someone you just “meet” online without
first checking with your parents. If your parents agree to the meeting, you make
sure that it is in a public place and bring a parent along.

4. Talk with your parents about posting pictures of yourself or others online
and do not post any pictures that your parents consider to be inappropriate.

5. Do not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way that makes
you feel uncomfortable. It is not your fault if you got a message like that. If you
do, tell your parents right away.

6. Talk with your parents so that you can set up rules for going online
and using a mobile phone. Your parents will help you decide upon the time of
day that you can be online, the length of time you can be online and appropriate

lOMoARcPSD|37494730

sites for you to visit. You will not access other sites or break these rules
without their permission.

7. Do not give out your passwords to anyone (even your best friend/s) other
than your parents.

8. Check with your parents before downloading or installing software or

doing anything that could possibly harm your computer or mobile device or
jeopardize your family’s privacy.

9. Be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or
is against the law.

10. Help your parents understand how to have fun and learn things online
and teach them things about the Internet, computers, and other technology.

With these personal safety rules, you will be safe with your family as well as
your friends and classmates using online learning. If many of you practice these safety
measures, then our community is safe to live with as well as our country, the
Philippines.

Health Protocols

Even without this COVID-19 pandemic, you still need to maintain

personal care. In DepEd MEMORANDUM No., s. 2020 FIRST SET
OF POLICY DIRECTIVES OF THE DEPED TASK FORCE NCOV
emphasize personal care protocol to help prevent the spread of this
virus. Personal care would include: “personal hygiene, including
frequent and proper handwashing with soap and water, the
application of rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer, and proper cough
etiquette (maintain distance and cover coughs and sneezes with a
tissue or the crook of your elbow); maintaining healthy lifestyles,
including proper hydration by drinking 8-10 glasses of water within
the day, consumption of nutritious foods, and ensuring food safety;
ensuring environmental sanitation; and consulting a physician when
symptoms attributable to respiratory infection (e.g. coughs, colds,
fever, and other related symptoms) persist, and for extracting
information on travel history to affected areas and exposure, based
on the latest DOH decision tool accessible via
https://www.doh.gov.ph/2019-nCoV.”

Aside from this given health protocol, as an adolescent at this time you
need to take care of your personal hygiene – like taking a bath, shaving, using

Downloaded by Jennylou Antonio (jenylou.antonio@deped.gov.ph)

lOMoARcPSD|37494730

deodorant, taking care of yourself during your monthly period, and brushing
your teeth.

Also, part of your personal care is keeping a healthy diet. Eat nutritious
food to improve your overall health. Avoid eating junk food for this may lead to
chronic diseases like kidney failure, diabetes, or heart disease when you get
older. Personal care means taking care of yourself and not damaging it. Getting
enough sleep can also boost your immune system. Have at least eight (8) hours
of good sleep each night. Oversleeping or having less sleep affects your mood
and your body. Your bad mood because of less sleep or over sleeping will affect
your interaction with others like your family members and this may lead to
misunderstanding. So, avoid oversleeping or having less sleep.

Having a regular physical activity is also part of personal care. Walking

for 30 minutes early in the morning is good enough for your heath. You have a
lot of choices for your physical activities like doing Zumba, biking, hiking,
jogging or even playing ball games with friends.

Doing this everyday will be a normal healthy for a healthy life. The
combination of both personal care and personal safety lessons in times of need
is very important to learn as you journey with your adolescent life. Enjoy
becoming an adolescent with a healthy lifestyle with your family.

Processing Questions:
1. How do you feel about sharing this activity with your family members?
2. What personal care and safety ideas have you realized?
3. What would you advise your friends or classmates on their personal care
and safety?
4. What do you think is the importance of personal care and safety in the
protection of oneself and others?
