Course offered to: 4 year students

Prerequisite: none
2. Course objective

The course will covers Physical, mechanical, electrical and chemical properties of metals,
semiconductors, ceramics, polymers and composites, with an emphasis on understanding
fundamental issues. Relationships between the processing, micro and macro structure of
materials with their properties. At the end the students have the above knowledge.
3. Course rationale

By the end of the module, the students are expected to:

 Know basic concepts in mechanics of materials

 Estimate the properties (mechanical, electrical, and magnetic) of materials using parameters
related to their structures.
 Recognize the general applicability of chemical engineering principles (thermodynamics and
kinetics) in materials design.
 Recognize the various methods to synthesize, fabricate, and process materials.
 Strength and deformation calculations of loaded members:
 Design methods of simple machine members
