oxidized

ii. 3Hg2+ + 2Fe (s) 3Hg2 + 2Fe3+

reduced
oxidized

iii. Fe2O3 + 3CO 2Fe + 3CO2

reduced

2. Calculate the oxidation number (ON) of the following

i. Cr in CaCr2O7
2 + 2Cr + 7(-2) = 0
Cr = 12/2
Cr = +6
ii. S in SO3
S + 3(-2) = 0
S = +6
iii. P in PF3-1
P + 3(-1) = -1
P = +2
iv. B in LiBF4
1 + B + 4(-1) = 0
B = +3
v. Cr in Cr2O7-2
2Cr + 7(-2) = -2
Cr = +6
3. Write the balance ionic equation to represent the oxidation of iodide ion (Ι −) by
permanganate ion (MnO4-) in basic solution to yield molecular iodine (Ι2) and
manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2) based on the following chemical equation:

MnO4- + I- → MnO2 + Ι2
(4 points)
Oxidation: [2I- I2 + 2e-] x3
Reduction: [MnO4- + 4H+ + 3e- MnO2 + 2H2O] x2
6I- + 2MnO4- + 8H+ 3I2 + 2MnO2 + 4H2O

4. In a dry cell battery, the anode of the cell consists of zinc (Zn) can that is in contact
with manganese dioxide (MnO2) and an electrolyte. The electrolyte consists of
ammonium chloride and zinc chloride. While, carbon rod serves as the cathode,
which immersed in the electrolyte in the canter of the cell. The cell reactions are:

Anode: Zn(s) → Zn2+ (aq) + e-

Cathode: NH4+ (aq) + MnO2 (s) + e- → Mn2O3 (s) + NH3 (aq)

i. Write the overall reaction equation for dry cell battery.

Oxidation: Zn Zn2+ + 2e-
Reduction: NH4+ + 2MnO2 + H+ + 2e- Mn2O3 + NH3 + H2O
Zn + NH4+ + 2MnO2 + H+ Zn2+ + Mn2O3 + NH3 + H2O

ii. Calculate the mass of Zn2+ formed if 45.0 g of MnO2 used for this reaction.
Zn + NH4+ + 2MnO2 + H+ Zn2+ + Mn2O3 + NH3 + H2O
Mass = 45.0g Mass = ?
Mol MnO2 = 45.0 2 mol MnO2 : 1 mol Zn2+
55 + 2(16) 0.517 mol MnO2 : 0.259 mol Zn2+
= 0.517 mol
Mass Zn2+ = 0.259 x 65
= 16.835 g
5. In a galvanic cell, zinc and copper electrode are immersed in a solution containing
dissolved salt of the corresponding metal. The two solutions are connected with salt
bridge and allows ions to diffuse through it:

Oxidation half-reaction: Zn (s) Zn2+ (aq) + 2e- = + 0.76 V

Reduction half-reaction: Cu+2 (aq) + 2e- Cu (s) = + 0.34 V

i. Produce the overall reaction equation for the reaction. (2 points)

Zn + Cu2+ Zn2+ + Cu

ii. Construct the IUPAC notation for the galvanic cell. (2 points)

Zn Zn2+ Cu2+ Cu

Salt bridge

iii. Calculate the electromotive force (e.m.f) of the reaction.

(3 points)
Zn Zn2+ + 2e- = + 0.76 V
Cu+2 + 2e- Cu = + 0.34 V
Zn + Cu2+ Zn2+ + Cu = 1.10 V

6. Write the balance ionic equation of the following reactions:

i. HCOOH + MnO4- CO2 + Mn2+ in acidic solution

ii. MnO4- + SO2 Mn2+ + HSO4- in acidic solution

iii. Oxidation: Fe2+ Fe3+ + e-

Reduction: H2O2 + e- H2O

➢ TIPS FINAL
• Hafal ON utk common elements such as H (+1), O (-2), Ca (+2) [yg dlm notes].
• Differentiate term seperti oxidation, reduction, oxidizing and reducing agent.
• Revise exercise dan buat past years.
• Utk balanced equation, soalan tak susah macam soalan no 6 (exercise).
