Lesson
4.4 Reteach

To multiply a multi-digit number by a two-digit number, use

partial products. First multiply by the ones. Then multiply by the
tens. Add the partial products to find the product.

Example Find 243 × 52. Estimate: 250 × 50 = 12,500

Step 1: Multiply 243 by 2 ones, or 2. Regroup as necessary.
243
× 52
486 2 ones × 243 = 486 ones

Step 2: Multiply 243 by 5 tens, or 50. Regroup as necessary.

21
243
× 52
486
12,150 5 tens × 243 = 1,215 tens = 12,150 ones
Step 3: Add the partial products.
Make sure the partial

243 the correct place values.
× 52
486
+ 12,150
12,636
So, 243 × 52 = 12,636. Reasonable? 12,636
is close to 12,500.P

Example Find 2,105 × 108. Estimate: 2,100 × 100 = 210,000

Step 1: Multiply 2,105 by 8 ones, or 8. Regroup as necessary.
2,105

5.1 Reteach

Example Find 0.12 × 103.

You can use a place value chart to multiply by powers of 10.

Hundreds Tens Ones . Tenths Hundredths

0.12 × 1 = 0 . 1 2
1
0.12 × 10 = 0.12 × 10 = 1 . 2
0.12 × 102 = 0.12 × 100 = 1 2 .
0.12 × 103 = 0.12 × 1,000 = 1 2 0 .
So, 0.12 × 103 = 120.

Notice the pattern: Every time you multiply a number by 10, each digit
shifts one position to the left in a place value chart. When you multiply
a number by a power of 10, the number of places the decimal point
moves to the right is the same as the exponent.
Example Find 5.4 × 0.01.

Tens Ones . Tenths Hundredths Thousandths

5.4 × 1 = 5 . 4
5.4 × 0.1 = 0 . 5 4
5.4 × 0.01 = 0 . 0 5 4

So, 5.4 × 0.01 = 0.054.

Notice the pattern: When you multiply by 0.1, the decimal point
moves one place to the left. When you multiply by 0.01, the
decimal point moves 2 places to the left.

5.3 Reteach

To multiply a decimal and a whole number, you can use a

model that has 10 rows and 10 columns, forming 100 equal
small squares.

Each small square represents one hundredth, or 0.01.

The large square equals 100 × 0.01 = 1.
Another way to

addition.

0.15 + 0.15 + 0.15 + 0.15 + 0.15 + 0.15 + 0.15 = 1.05

105 squares are shaded in all. This represents 1.05.
So, 0.15 × 7 = 1.05.
