Folding Paper Chain

Here is a time consuming but interesting project specially for your vacation, when you
are having a lot of free time. You are going to make a decorative chain of Kite Paper. It
is portable and can be kept in pocket due to easy self folding.

You will need Kite Papers of different colours, gum, fine brush or stick to apply gum, pair
of scissors, small piece of century paper, pencil and compass.

Fold the Kite Paper several times to make a square shaped bunch of size 10cm x 10cm.
Draw flower design on the top of bunch. A typical flower design can be easily drawn by
using compass. Cut the outline neatly to obtain large number of flowers. Make such 50
flowers. A piece of cut design is named as flower. Outer tips of petals are named as
A,B,C,D,E,F. Centre of flower or the midpoint is named as G.

Take two flowers. By using fine brush or stick , apply gum to A,B,C,D,E,F points of a
flower. Paste it on another flower. You will get a pair of flowers, joined only at
A,B,C,D,E,F points.

Make 25 pairs by repeating the procedure.

Now take any two pairs of same colour and apply gum to point G by using the fine
brush. Paste the two pairs at point G. At this stage, there is a small chain of four
flowers.

Join the remaining pairs by repeating the procedure. Keep the colour of Kite Paper
constant for every five flowers. After five flowers, change the colour.

For the first and the last flower, use Century Paper instead of Kite Paper. The thickness
of Century Paper gives support to inner flowers.

This is a skill oriented project. You will improve your performance by doing practice.

A flower design is suggested here, which can be drawn by using compass. You can
create new designs, as per your liking. The new design will have a centre point. Outer
points on the edge may vary in numbers. They may be less than six or greater than six.
If the new design is octagonal, there will be eight points on the edge: A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H.
Then the centre point will be named as I.
