A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 6

Prepared by: Pamela Grace Espiritu

March 4, 2024

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
 differentiates algebraic expressions from algebraic equations;
 write examples of algebraic expressions and equations.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Algebraic Expressions and Equations
References: Mathematics 6 Module
https://www.slideshare.net/michaelparagas1/q3math6module3pdf
Approach: Experiential Learning
Strategy: 7E Model
Method: Inductive Method
Technique: Jumbled Letters, TPS (Think-Pair-Share))

III. Materials:
Powerpoint presentations, chalk and board, show me board

IV. Procedures:

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activity

Greetings
“Good morning class” Good morning Ma’am

B. Review
“Who can give a summary of our previous (the students will raise their hands)
lesson?”

ELICIT

“Before we start our discussion for today,

let’s play a game called Jumbled Letters.
Try to guess the following jumbled words.”

(presented using PowerPoint presentation) (the students will raise their hands to
participate in the game)
Gibberish Words
Answer:
1. NTOIQUAE 1. EQUATION
2. EESSSPRNION 2. EXPRESSIONS
3. SBLEIABVAR 3. VARIABLES
4. ICGALBRA 4. ALGEBRAIC
5. MECARINUL 5. NUMERICAL

“Good job! Now let’s try to find out how

these words are related to our topic for
today”
ENGAGE

(it will be presented in the board using

math strips (Cartolina).

5y4 + 2y2 + 9 3x5 + 2x4 = 5x9

“Class, will you try to read what is written (the students will raise their hands)
on the strips”
(Students possible answers.)
“What do you think are the difference of Ma’am the other one has equal sign.
these two?”
Ma’am the has a different letter.

“Now that you are already familiar with

our lesson for today, let’s try to answer the (the students will answer the following
following. Your show me board and work questions.)
with your seatmate. Answer the following
by writing your answers in your show me
board.”

“Let us determine how much you already

know about algebraic expressions and
equations.”

A. Directions. Translate the

following word phrases into
algebraic expressions. Choose the
letter of the correct answer.
Answers Key:
1. Five more than x 1. A
a. 5+x b. 5x+x c. x+5x
2. Eight added to y 2. C
a. y8-8 b. 8-y c. 8+y
3. Nine subtracted from k 3. B
a. 9-k b. k-9 c. 9k-k
4. H increased by 12 4. A
a. h+12 b. h-12 c. 12-h

EXPLORE

“Let us try to dig deeper and learn how

these two strips are different from each
other”

“Now, let’s try to identify the variable/s in

each expression.”

“From the 5 words in our jumbled letter

activity, connecting to the strips we have in
the board, these two are called expressions
and equations”.

“But how can we differentiate an

expression to an equation?’

“Let’s read the definition of terms from (the students will raise their hands to
your module on page 1” engage in lesson)

What is an Equation? Equation is a statement that the values of

two mathematical expressions are
equal (indicated by the sign =).

What is Numerical Expression? Numerical expression is an expression

that combines numbers and one or more
operation symbols.

Algebraic Expression? Algebraic expression a mathematical

phrase that uses variables, numerals, and
operation symbols.

EXPLAIN

“Now that you know the meaning of (the students will raise their hand to
what’s an equation is” recite.)

From this example;

5y4 + 2y2 + 9 3x5 + 2x4 = 5x9

“Which here is an equation? And why?” Ma’am the equation there is 3x5 + 2x4 =
5x9

“Yes, based from the definition, the

equation is a statement that the values of
two mathematical expressions are equal
(indicated by the sign =).”

“So, what do we call this first example?

5y4 + 2y2 + 9”
Ma’am Expression!
“Correct! This is an example of an
expression.

There are two types of expression, what are

these?”
Ma’am the two types of expression are
Numerical and Algebraic expression.

“Yes! So, what kind of expression is this

example?”

2x + 8
Algebraic expression
“Why do you say so?”
Ma’am based on the definition the
algebraic expressions is a mathematical
phrase that uses variables, numerals,
and operation symbols.

“Yes, very good! This is an example of

algebraic expression based on the
definition on the book.”

“Class can you try to give me an example

of Numerical expression? And can you
write it on the board?”
5y4 + 2y2 + 9
“Very Good”

“Aside from your classmate, can someone

give me another example”
13(2x – 5y)
“Now, do you have any questions?”
None Ma’am
Generalization:
 A numerical expression is an
expression that combines numbers
and one or more operation
symbols.
 Algebraic expression is a
mathematical phrase that uses
variables, numerals, and operation
symbols.
 An algebraic equation is a
mathematical sentence with an
equal sign which shows that two
expressions on either side are
equal.
 To write a related algebraic
equation to a given sentence, you
have to translate the word phrases
into algebraic expression, then
replace the phrase "is equal to" or
"is" by the mathematical symbol "
= ".

ELABORATE

“Now class we will have a game, I will

show some examples of equation and
expressions, by writing your answers in
your show me board, you and your
seatmate will get a point, whoever gets the
highest score will be declared as the
winners. This is a Think-Pair-Share
Activity’

Directions. Identify the following if the

given are equation or expression.
Answers Key:
1. 35a – 24 = 46 1. Equation
2. ½ b + 34 = 49 2. Equation

4. 1–1 4. Expression
5. 2p 5. Expression
6. 10x – 5 = 45 6. Equation
7. 3(15 + y) = 60 7. Equation
8. 5n + 2 8. Expression
9. 52(x + 6) 9. Expression
10. 3x + 2y 10. Expression

“Wow! you really did a good job!”

“To ensure that you fully understood the

lesson, it is vital that you know the
meaning of the following”

1. What is variable? Variable is any letter or symbol that

represents a number.

2. What is Algebraic Expression? Algebraic expression is a mathematical

phrase that uses variables, numerals, and
operation symbols.

Algebraic equation is a mathematical

3. What is Algebraic Equation? sentence with an equal sign which shows
that two expressions on either side are
equal.
