ANATOMY AND
PHYSIOLOGY OF
REPRODUCTION
Lesson Objectives;:
When you finish reading this chapter, you should be
able to:
MENSTRUAL PHASE
When the ovum isn't fertilized, high
estrogen and progesterone levels
cease FSH and LH release. The drop in
hormone levels results in endometrial
shedding and subsequent bleeding,
marking the lowest point in ovarian
hormone levels
Proliferative phase
It occurs when the hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary gland to
release FSH that stimulates the ovaries to produce estrogen and causes
ova to mature in the ovarian follicles. Endometrium is repaired,
thickens, and becomes well-vascularized in response to increasing
levels of estrogens
SECRETORY PHASE
Hypothalamus triggers FSH release, stimulating ovaries to
produce estrogen and mature ova. Rising estrogen levels
repair and thicken the endometrium, enhancing
vascularity.
• no monthly cycle;
• elongation of vocal cords (lower voice);
• broader shoulders; and
• deeper chest cavity
Summary
The transition from childhood to adulthood involves various
physical changes. The adolescent stage is marked by dynamic
changes in physical and behavioral traits. Despite differences
in appearance, men and women share similar sexual organs,
ovaries being female gonads, and testes being male gonads.
These gonads produce germ cells (ova and sperm) and sex
hormones, essential for reproduction. The union of ova and
sperm can result in the creation of new life.
