Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the TLE 10 – Technical Drafting Module on Drafting

Structural Layout and Details using CAD!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed
by its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou
Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig
through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5
Cs, namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and
Character while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box
in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use

this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the TLE 10 – Technical Drafting Module on Drafting

Structural Layout and Details using CAD!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while
being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and

skills that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the

lesson at hand.

Recap - This part of the module provides a review of

concepts and skills that you already know about a previous
lesson.

Upon completion of this lesson, you are expected to:

• identify the different parts of a roof truss;
• draw sample of the truss connection details; and
• appreciate the importance of roof in a structure.

LESSON 4: DRAFTING STRUCTURAL LAYOUT AND DETAILS USING CAD

LO4.2 DRAFT STRUCTURAL FLOORS AND ROOF PLAN

LO4.2.9 TRUSS CONNECTION DETAILS

A roof truss is considered the most important key component in engineering

system in a building. They serve a critical function and design depends on
various factors. Without roof, buildings would be exposed to all kinds of
elements, rendering them completely useless.

Metal Roof Basics

Steel trusses of various designs rise from the topmost concrete roof
beam. The trusses are welded to stubs of rebar protruding through and well
anchored in the concrete roof beam (https://www.alphasteel.ph/roof-truss/).

6. Drawing below

connections between
the truss and fascia
board, and fascia
board to gutter, and
gutter to downspout.

A downspout, waterspout, downpipe, drain spout, drainpipe,[2] roof drain

pipe, is a pipe for carrying rainwater from a rain gutter. The purpose of which
is to allow water from a gutter to reach the ground without dripping or
splashing down the building structure. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downspout)
11

The fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of
the roof. It is fixed directly to the lower ends of the roof trusses which caps
the end of rafters outside a building used to hold the rain gutter. The finished
surface below the fascia and rafters is called the soffit or eave.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascia_(architecture)

Gusset plate is a plate for connecting trusses, beams and girders to

columns. A gusset plate can be fastened to a permanent member either by
bolts, rivets or welding or a combination of the three.

Rain gutter, a narrow trough or duct which collects rainwater from the roof
of a building and diverts it away from the structure, typically into a drain.

Sag rods are used to provide lateral support for the purlins (to prevent sag in
direction parallel to sloping roof due to vertical applied loads). They are
designed to support the component of roof loads parallel to the roof.

Directions: Choose one from connection detail above and draw it on a clean
piece of paper with full details and specifications.
12

In your own understanding, what role does a truss play in a roof structure?

___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

A structure needs to have a strong component to function properly. One part

missing and the whole structure will be affected. As a learner, how will you
relate this to your learning style?

___________________________________________________________________________

Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct words/terms to complete the
statement.

1. A __________ plate can be fastened to a permanent member either by

bolts, rivets or welding or a combination of the three.
2. The finished surface below the fascia and rafters is called the __________.
3. The purpose of __________ which is to allow water from a gutter to reach
the ground without dripping or splashing down the building structure.
4. Without __________, buildings would be exposed to all kinds of elements,
rendering them completely useless.
5. The __________ is fixed directly to the lower ends of the roof trusses
which caps the end of rafters outside a building used to hold the rain
gutter.
