SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN in Mathematics

Grade 7

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. define what is an integer and identify the rules of operations on integers;
2. relate integers involving operations on integers in real life application; and
3. solve problems using operations on integers.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Algebra (Operations on Integers)
Reference: E-Math1: Elementary Algebra pages 15-17
Author: Orlando Oronce
Materials: visual aids, video presentation.

III. Learning Activities:

A. Preparatory Activity

1. Routine Activity
a.Prayer
b. Greetings
c.Checking of attendance

2. What is an Integer?
An integer is a positive or negative whole number, including 0.
Examples of integers are: -5,0,1,5,8,97 and 3.

B. Preparation
1. Motivation
‘Human Number Line’

The teacher will extend her arms side ward to make a number line and ask
questions to the students.
C. Presentation
1. Explain the operation of integer
What are the four operations on integers?
- Addition (+)
- Subtraction (-)
- Multiplication (*)
- Division (/)

2. The rules of operations on integers

- Rule #1 for Adding Integers (+)
The sum of two positive integers is always positive.
5+1=6

- Rule #2 for Adding Integers (+)

The sum of two negative integers is always negative.
-5 + (-1) = -6

- Rule #3 for Adding Integers Continued

When you add a positive and negative integer, you are really subtracting.
Then, you give the answer the sign of the greater absolute value.
-5 + 1 = -4

- Rule #4 for Subtracting Integers (-)

To subtract an integer, add its opposite.
You will need to correctly change all subtraction problems into addition
problems!
5 – (-2) = 5 + 2 = 7
-5 – 2 = -5 + (-2) = -7

- Rules for Multiplying Integers (x)

The product of two integers with the same signs is POSITIVE.
The product of two integers with different signs is NEGATIVE

- Rules Summary for Multiplication

Positive x Positive = Positive
Negative x Negative = Positive
Positive x Negative= Negative
Negative x Positive = Negative

6 x (-3) = -18
3x3=9
-Rule #5 for Dividing Integers (÷)
The quotient of two integers with the same signs is POSITIVE.
The quotient of two integers with different signs is NEGATIVE.

- Rules Summary for Division

Positive ÷ Positive = Positive
Negative ÷ Negative = Positive
Positive ÷ Negative= Negative
Negative ÷ Positive = Negative

18 ÷ (-2) = -9
-48 ÷ (-6) = 8

D. Generalization
These integers can be applied on operations. There are rules on getting the
answers.
1. First is in addition. What would be the result if a positive integer is being added to
a positive integer.
2. What would be the answer if a positive integer is being added to a negative
integer?
3. In subtraction, this rule is the same with addition. In multiplication and division,
they also have the same rules. If both positive is being multiplied and divided, the
answer is?
4. If the factors have different signs?
5. If the dividend and divisor have different signs?

E. Application
A group activity!
You have to identify what is the answer in this activity!

G1- -69 to 67= -2

G2- -25/5 = -5
G3- -8(7) = -56
G4- 4-7 = -3
F. Evaluation
Direction: In a 1/2 sheet of paper, answer the following
1. -8 + 20 =
2. 90 - 105 =
3. 50/-5 =
4. 6*10 =
5. -7*-300 =
6. -2+4=
7. 15-4=
8. -23+31=
9. 50/10=
10.18*6=

H. Assignment
