2. Course description
This course tends to give students opportunity to explore the basic concepts
and principles of heat and thermodynamics (including the concepts of temperature,
heat, work, internal energy; the kinetic theory of gases; the laws of thermodynamics;
heat engines and refrigerators; heat phenomena; real gases, liquid, and solid; phases
and phase transition; and thermodynamic functions) and explain real phenomena
related to heat and thermodynamics. In addition, this course along with the course of
English for Physics helps students initially develop skills of using English language.
3. Course Objectives
3.1. General Course Objective
This course helps students have the ability to teach and work in fields related to
heat and thermodynamics at educational, research institutions and companies.
3.2. Specific Course Objectives (COs)
Completing this course, students will have:
- CO1: knowledge of heat and thermodynamics necessary for professional
activities and life-long learning,
- CO2: soft and creative thinking skills, ability to inspire and adapt to changes
in the workplace,
- CO3: professional qualities and ethics.
4. Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
After completing the course, students will be able to:
CLOs Course Learning Outcomes (CLO) PIs Levels
Establish the first law of thermodynamics, the increase in
CLO1 entropy principle, Van der Waals and Clapeyron-Clausius PI1.2 M
equations
Prove the equivalence of statements about the second law
CLO2 PI1.3 M,A
of thermodynamics, the contents of Carnot theorem

261
Apply experimental laws of gas, the kinetic theory of
CLO3 gases and laws of thermodynamics to solve problems PI1.3 M,A
related to gases
Apply knowledge of real gases and liquids to solve
CLO4 problems related to real gases, liquid, and phase PI1.3 M,A
transitions
Explain the meaning of temperature, principles for
establishing temperature scales, operation principles of
CLO5 PI1.4 M
heat engines and refrigerator, and heat phenomena and
processes in thermodynamic systems
Develop skill of using English language in study and
CLO6 PI4.3 R
research
Do a learning project through making simple PI7.2 I
CLO7 thermodynamic models
PI7.3 I
5. Matrix of course learning outcomes (CLOs) and program learning
outcomes (PLOs):
The level of contribution and support of CLOs to the PLO is specifically
determined as follows:
Fill in one of the levels I, R, M or leave blank (if there is no connection) and
enter A in the corresponding box

PLOs

CLOs PLO1 PLO2 PLO3 PLO4 PLO5 PLO6 PLO7 PLO8 PLO9

PI1.2 PI1.3 PI1.4 PI4.3 PI7.2 PI7.3

CLO 7 I I

Note:
- I (Introduced) – CLO supports the PLO and at the level of
introduction/beginners
- R (Reinforced) – CLO supports the PLO and at the level higher than the
level of introduction/beginners, giving chances for practice, experiment
and fieldtrips
- M (Mastery) – CLO strongly supports learners in mastering/ grasping or
achieving PLO/ PI. If the learner successfully completes this CLO, it is
considered that the learner has mastered a program indicator (PI) of the
PLO or even mastered the entire PLO.
- A (Assessed) – Critical CLO (maximum support for PLO achievement)
needs to be collected to measure how well learners achieve the PLO
6. Course assessment
6.1. Methods and forms of testing - assessment of the course
Student learning outcomes are assessed by the following components: formative
assessment, mid-term assessment, end-of-term assessment, and other assessment
activities.
