AMPUTATION BED Submitted to: Resp. Kalpana mam Introduction Amputation bed or stump bed or divided bed which is used by the nurse for the patient after amputation of the lower limb , where it is necessary to keep the stump visible and elevated . Amputation or stump bed is used for the patient whose leg is amputed. Purpose •To keep the stump in good position. •To observe the stump for hemorrhage constantly and apply tourniquet instantly if necessary. •To give extra warmth. •To ensure more safety and comfort by preventing soiling and staining. •To prevent jerking movements for amputated leg. •To Prepare for emergency, to have easy access and economy of time and energy. Equipment •The same articles needed for an operation bed. •Extra sheet. •Extra blanket. •Soft pillow with rubber mackintosh cover. •Towels. •Bed cradle. •Emergency dressing trolley and tourniquets. Procedure Arrange the articles at the bedside. Place the linen in order to use: •Prepare the foundations bed as in operation bed. •To make the lower half, use one sheet and blanket, for upper also, one top sheet and blanket. •Keep the lower half of the bed overlapped with the upper half as, in this way we can easily separate the two halves and observe the stump. •Elevate the stump over the soft pillow covered with the mackintosh. •Place the sandbags on either side of the stumps to prevent bleeding from jerking, sandbags help and prevent bleeding from jerking. •Bed cradles are used to take up the weight of the bed linen.
