than the other way around. In 1979, the numbers of people entering and leaving the UK were almost the same, at 10-12 million,
respectively. A significant increase in movement out of the UK occurred after 1984. It was recorded that 20 million people left in
1986, and this increased to 30 million people in 1988.

This number continued to increase until 1999; there were around 52 million people leaving the UK. An increase was also
