Quy tắc 1: Danh từ có 2 âm tiết => trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 1
Ví dụ: ‘children, ‘hobby, ‘habit, ‘labour, ‘trouble, ‘standard…

Ngoại lệ: ad’vice, ma’chine, mis’take…

Quy tắc 2: Tính từ có 2 âm tiết => trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 1

Ví dụ:: ‘basic, ‘busy, ‘handsome, ‘lucky, ‘pretty, ‘silly…

Ngoại lệ: a’lone, a’mazed, …

Quy tắc 3: Danh từ ghép => trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 1
Ví dụ: ‘birthday, ‘airport, ‘bookshop, ‘gateway, ‘guidebook, ‘filmmaker,…

Quy tắc 4: Động từ có 2 âm tiết => trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2
Ví dụ: be’gin, be’come, for’get, en’joy, re’lax, de’ny, re’veal,…

Ngoại lệ: ‘answer, ‘enter, ‘happen, ‘offer, ‘open…

Quy tắc 5: Các nguyên âm đôi có xu hướng nhận trọng âm (ea, ee, oo)

Ví dụ: increase, bamboo

Quy tắc 6: /ə/ và /i/ là hai âm tiết nhẹ, hầu như không nhận trọng âm.
Ví dụ: worry /ˈwɝː.i/ dù là động từ nhưng trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.

Giải thích: worry có âm tiết thứ 2 là /i/ nên âm tiết này không nhận trọng âm.
