ABOUT THE FESTIVAL (Legend/History/Myth)

Devotees of the locality believe that this temple is about 700 years old. The temple belongs to ’Mukaya’
community populated mainly at Madappally and Korapuzha in Kozhikode District. Though this is a
community temple, festivals are celebrated with the participation and co-operation of all irrespective of
caste, creed or religion. There is a Lotus Pond connected with the temple close to the sea. It is interesting
that though the pond is only 30 meters away from the sea, the water in it is free form salt and plenty of
lotus blooms every year. Main Goddess of this temple is ‘Amma’ Bhagavathy along with her daughter-
‘Makal’ Bhagavathy. Each of them has separate temples. Besides there are separate temples
forDaivathan, Kshethrapalan, Gulikan, Vishnumoorthy etc. Devotees of this community engaged in fishing
strongly believe that they are protected and saved from rough sea and weather and bring wealth by the
grace and blessings of the Goddess, they call as ‘Katalamma’. All kinds of Pooja, Archana, Nivedyam etc
are performed by the Kshethram Uralanmar of the community widely known as Velichappadan and
Karanavan. The most important festival of the temple is Pooram.
