Future Tenses
There are many ways to express future meaning in English. We use different words and phrases to talk about different
kinds of future meaning.
In this unit, we are going to look at how we use be going to to talk about future plans. We are also going to talk about
how we use the Future Simple and Future Progressive to talk about predictions.
Going to Future
We use be + going to followed by the base form of the verb to talk about plans we have made and actions that are
about to happen very soon.
Future Simple
We use the Future Simple to talk about events that we are sure will happen or predict will happen in the future.
These 3-D goggles will change the way people watch movies.
The International Gadget Show will not move to Tokyo next year.
Will smartphones be larger or smaller in the future?
Future Progressive
We use the Future Progressive to talk about a continuous or ongoing action which will be happening by a specific time
in the future.
Markers of Time
Markers of time can help us understand that an action is happening in the future. Examples of markers that indicate the
future include: later, tomorrow, in two days, next month, a year from now.
