Argumentative Essay
Why Electric Vehicles Are The Way Of The Future?

As the world's supply of fossil fuels is running out and the worry about global warming

is growing, it is a good time to start driving electric vehicles. According to podpoint (2022)

“Electric cars offer a range of financial, performance and environmental benefits when

compared with internal combustion engine vehicles.”. Therefore, Gas-powered vehicles are

marketed as non-friendly equipment because they destroy the environment due to producing a

huge amount of smog that affects human health with a lot of harmful diseases. Also, they

consume a huge portion of the available fossil fuels, some opposers are claiming that people

cannot rely on electric automobiles as they don’t travel as far as conventional gasoline

vehicles and have other disadvantages. In 1890, William Morrison created the first electric

car in the United States, which could go at a speed up to 23 kilometers per hour, automobile

manufacturers started developing battery technologies and converting several of their most

popular car models to electric vehicles around this period. As a result, it is a good time to

start thinking about using electric cars as they are the next transportation generation. They are

eco-friendly, efficient, and have a lower running cost.

To begin with, using electric cars have many positive impacts on our environment.

Choudhury (2021) discusses “researchers from the universities of Cambridge, Exeter and

Nijmegen in The Netherlands found that in 95% of the world, driving an electric car is better

for the environment than driving a gasoline-powered car.” (para. 5). Electric vehicles produce

zero tailpipe emissions which reduces the amount of polluted air in the atmosphere as they

lower the amount of smog produced by vehicles and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to

that, a study done by the National library of medicine proved that the intake of primary and
secondary smog pollutants causes a variety of harmful ailments, including respiratory

problems, cardiovascular malfunction, neurological disorders, and cancer (2021). As a result,

using electric cars have health benefits due to reducing harmful gases emitted from the

exhaust which contains lead and sulfur oxides that causes a lot of diseases such as lung

cancer. Also, Samsara’s (2019) study finds that electric vehicle manufacturers use eco-

friendly materials as they do not use new materials like plastic and metals instead, they use

all-natural or recycled materials, due to their being lightweight, eco-friendly, and durable, and

reduce the environmental impact during the EV production process. As mentioned before,

electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions and are made out of environmentally

sustainable materials.

In addition, according to Winters (2021), “A 2020 Consumer Reports study found that

EV owners, on average, spend 60% less on fuel compared to internal combustion engine

vehicles.” (para.9). The running cost of an electric vehicle is lower than a standard gasoline

car. Firstly, the cost of charging an electric car is less than a standard gasoline car for driving

the same distance. In addition to that, electric vehicles can be recharged using renewable

energy sources such as solar panels which further reduces the cost of recharging the car.

Moreover, as mentioned by Preston (2020) “Maintenance and repair costs for EVs

are significantly lower over the life of the vehicle—about half—than for gasoline-powered

vehicles”. (para. 7). By this explanation, an electric car doesn’t need maintenance as a

standard gasoline car, as it doesn’t have a combustion engine that requires an oil change, new

spark plugs or filters at regular intervals, even the brake pads in the electric cars have a larger

life span than in the standard gasoline cars because the electric cars use a technology that

allows the electric motor to decelerate the vehicle. Furthermore, according to EnergySage

(2022) “AEV batteries convert 59 to 62 percent of energy into vehicle movement while gas-
powered vehicles only convert between 17 and 21 percent.” (para. 3). Electric vehicles are

extremely efficient when compared to petrol cars because the energy is delivered more

efficiently from the motor to the wheels in these sorts of vehicles, and this results in a faster

transmission of energy.

Some opponents claim that electric cars cannot be driven as far as standard gasoline

cars, because electric vehicles cannot cover the same distance as a standard gasoline vehicle.

Also, they say electric vehicles require at least half an hour of charging at a specialized, high-

voltage charging port to be recharged. However, Simpson and Barlingen’s (2021) study

stated that an Electric vehicle can averagely cover 313 kilometers on a single charge, and

This is a reasonable covered distance for some people's daily tasks. In addition to that, Lisa

mentioned (2021) “When driving long distances you should take a break every two hours for

at least 15 minutes.” (para. 1). As a result to that, traveling by an electric vehicle is similar to

a standard gasoline car because in both situations they should take a break during a trip so

that the electric vehicle user can recharge his batteries by using the rapid charger, and

according to a study done by podpoint rapid chargers recharge electric vehicle batteries by

providing between 60-200 miles of range in 20-30 mins.

To conclude, I believe that electric cars are safer for our environment and reduce

operating costs. Electric vehicles have a low environmental impact, which minimizes the

amount of toxic air by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, it reduces chemicals

generated which may cause a variety of ailments. Furthermore, electric vehicle manufacturers

use natural and recycled materials as they are durable, eco-friendly, and reduce the

environmental impact during the electric vehicle production process. Moreover, electric

vehicles have lower operating costs than normal gasoline vehicles as charging an electric
vehicle is less expensive than driving the same distance in a regular gasoline car. Also, an

electric car does not require the same maintenance as a standard gasoline car because it does

not have a combustion engine that requires service at regular time intervals. Again, Electric

vehicles are particularly efficient when compared to gasoline vehicles because energy is

transported more efficiently from the engine to the wheels in these types of vehicles. In the

end, I recommend governments and organizations start spreading awareness among people

about the disadvantages of gasoline-powered cars and start advising people to use electric

cars due to their low running costs and to save their environment and personal health.
