TEAMWORK LEARNING 3: Make Academic Connections

Discuss the following briefly and concisely. Limit the discussion to no more than 7 sentences for each
discussion.

1. What might explain tuition differences among senior high school in Butuan City.

Tuition is defined as a fee paid as a learner’s contribution to the compensation of instructors and
university or school staff usually in higher education and in universities. In Butuan City, there are a lot of
schools to choose from both public and private institutions. However, most people weigh their decisions
according to how much tuition costs in a particular school since there is a range of tuition among these
institutions. The major reason why these fees differ is because of the school’s expenses and visions
particularly in terms of infrastructure and organizational expansion. The bigger the school, the more
students to teach which also means that the institution should hire more staff and construct more buildings
to accommodate the needs of enrolled learners. Another reason is that some schools are public which means
the school funded by the government and some are private institutions which means they stand on their
own using the tuition of their students. In some cases, some pay less tuition even when they are enrolled in
a private school, this is because of scholarships and vouchers from the government and other private sectors
like big companies which provide cash assistance to fill in the remaining sum of their tuition fee. (Luy,
Sean Yvsser and Gerada, Andrea Nichole)

2. What do you think are some unplanned results of conditional cash transfer? Provide 3 results.

Although the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program means good, there are still effects of it that do not
serve its purpose. The first effect is the tendency of unfair selection wherein barangay officials grant the
4Ps application of those close to them like family members and friends despite having a stable source of
income. The second effect is the dependency of the beneficiaries. 4Ps was implemented to give cash
assistance to poor Filipino families and assist them to stand on their own by using the money wisely like
putting up their own small business however, most beneficiaries completely rely on the allowances that
they get from the program. The third effect is the failure of the allowance holder to allocate the money to
proper use, for instance, the head of the family is a drug addict and instead of buying food for the family,
the 4Ps allowance is spent on liquor and drugs. These problems are very hard to manage since the
government cannot perfectly keep an eye on every beneficiary. (Lasala, Clyde April, and Grado, Ely Laica)

3. Does fewer people receiving social benefits necessarily mean that fewer people are living in
poverty? Explain why or why not.

No, fewer people receiving social benefits does not equate to lesser people suffering due to poverty.
Social benefits rely on government implemented programs. With lesser programs that cater to the needs of
poor people, the lesser social benefits there are, and this does not change the number of people below the
poverty line. It just simply means that there are fewer opportunities and social benefits. (Libranza, Sean
Venber, and Mora, Art Ediphine)
