The American Romanticism differs formally and ideologically from its European
counterparts. This is visible in the cultural dichotomy of the phenomenon which, in its
turn, leads to a typological discrepancy. The European forms of Romanticism - among
which one could mention the German-British type and the French-Italian model - have
at least a psychological unity, if not a structural homogenity, too. In Europe, romantics
reveal generally a distinct morality, irrespective of their social and historical background.
This is not the case with America.
Across the ocean, the Romanticism unveils an essential inner incongruency,
which is supported both ideologically and psychologically by the six major writers who
belong to the movement. They tend to relate differently to the literary act as such and
seem to have opposite perspectives on the function of literature itself. If, on the one
hand, Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman - under the self-imposed name of
"Transcendentalism" - create a gnostic model of aesthetic practice, Poe, Melville,
Hawthorne, on the other hand, represent an agnostic artistic direction - under the sign of
"Ascendentalism", a concept arbitrarily used in the book for reasons connected with the
symbolism of the group.
This distinction implies an ethnopsychological evaluation of the New World itself.
One can easily notice that America was traditionally split between the North and the
South and, later on, came to be divided into two mental/spiritual segments, symbolically
known as the East and the West. Indeed, at a certain point, the socio-political line of
separation between the Northern liberalism and the Southern feudalism was substituted
by a subtle and sophisticated antagonism between the Eastern Coast and the Wild
West. The basic distinction one could make between the two poles of spiritual irradiation
is historical and, implicitly, psychological. Whereas the East crystallizes an Euro-
American mentality that takes over fundamental elements from the civilization of the Old
Continent, investing them with new significances, the coast of the Pacific develops by
itself, isolated from any major influence and, consequently, generates a specific manner
of perceiving history and society.
This observation can be supported with phenomenological and metaphysical
arguments. In short, if the West stresses upon a horizontal representation of history -
which is equally comprehensive and transcendent (see the unlimited streching out of
the territory, the patriarchal mentality and the static temporal perspective), the Eastern
Coast unveils a sort of vertical historical vision - which is clearly ascendent and
dominantly agnostic (the limitation of habitation, the vertical spatial growth in endless
sky-scrapers of glass and steel, the liberal mentality and a linear dynamic sense of
existence). The geography, along with the architecture, becomes thus a cultural
metaphor of history. The spiritual code of the West is the image of the Arizonian Grand
Canyon, while the East expresses itself semiotically by means of a traditional sky-
scraper, such as the Empire State Building in new York.
We may say therefore that the American Romanticism has at least one cultural
component in its ideographic representation. If the transcendentalist ideology is a rather
"horizontal" form of knowledge and artistic practice, insisting much upon descriptive
essays and impersonal poetry, the ascendentalist literature becomes a cryptic "vertical"
aesthetic methodology, paying attention primarily to the symbolic (allegorical) prose.
The intersection of the two typological (and cultural) axes shapes out a kind of parabolic
map of the American spirituality:
East
West Transcendentalism
Ascendentalism
The ascendentalist (vertical) line suggests the cryptic agnostic perspective the
representatives of this direction (Poe, Melville, Hawthorne) have in literature, whereas
the transcendentalist one indicates the flat gnostic manner of writing, specific to the
theorists of the movement (Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman). Moreover, this is the very
image of the chief cultural dichotomy of America, i.e. the verticality of the East vs. the
horizontality of the West.
Unlike the Ascendentalism which is an implicit poetics, the Transcendentalism
functions as a self-sufficient ideology. In Emerson's and his disciples' terms absolute
knowledge can be accomplished by means of the so-colled act of transcendence. This
act entails the dissipation of the identity (the "I") and the symbiosis with the universal
and the otherness. Sometimes it can imply self-denial and stoic elation. Emerson's
essay Nature deals with this issue from a metaphysical perspective. The self (the "I") is
nothing else but an artificial extension of the individual's social existence. The self
depends on "commodities", a long series of material conditions of man, specific to
civilization, which have eliminated or, at least, inhibited the natural code of life (still
genuine). To transcend the self means to regain the archetype, i.e. the impersonal "not
I" - according to Emerson. This implies the existence outside the person and is the
premise of the absolute knowledge.
The Transcendentalism can therefore lead to the annihilation of the social
individual, being anti-statal in a Nietzschean way. Thoreau explores successfully this
direction of the movement, trying to invest the theory with a practical dimension. His
diary - Walden - investigates the posibility of transcending the self and of integrating
into the essential nature. His anti-social experiments are presented in Civil
Disobedience and Life Without Principle, where the practical side of
Transcendentalism gets its moment of excellency. Thoreau's conviction is that our need
for "vital heat" (food, shelter, clothing and warmth) has been gradually turned into a
purpose, leading to the loss of true (natural) identity and spirit. Our only chance is to
return to nature and rebuild an archetypal way of living.
Whitman creates a poetic version of Transcendentalism, where an impersonal
persona replaces the Emersonian "not I". The poet (persona) generates a sort of
pantheism that touches everything everywhere, moving at different strata of history and
geography. In his poem Song of Myself, the mankind consists of the poet's "brothers"
and "sisters" and in the 1855 Preface to the Leaves of Grass, the continents
"correspond" to each other in a kind of transcendentalist (family) reunion. In a Hegelian
way, America is identified with "the end of history", i.e. the last level of spiritual (mental,
psychological) transcendence.
The vision of the transcendentalists is horizontal and gnostic, similar to the
Western geography of America (despite the fact that none of the representatives of the
movement can be actually identified as a "Westerner") and their cognitive movement is
spatially flat, exactly like the internal colonozation of the New World. Although there are
slight differences among the attitudes of the writers (Emerson is the theorist, Thoreau
the practitioner and Whitman the poet), the Transcendentalism appears to be organic
just like image of the Grand Canyon.
Conversely, the ascendentalist thinking - which is essentially implicit, never
expressed openly in an aesthetic manifesto - imposes a cryptic artistic methodology in
literature. The cypher, along with the semantic connotation and a kind of agnosticism
are the distinctive landmarks of Ascendentalism. Its aesthetic constructions follow
naturally a vertical trajectory, relying much on the allegory and even the traditional
parable. Metaphysically speaking, the idea of verticality can function both ways, i.e.
upward and downward. This actually happens with the representatives of the direction,
who are aesthetically oriented either toward the depths of the human mind and the
mystery of the world (Poe) or toward the symbolic ascension in aesthetic terms
(Melville). An ascendentalist may also be very well interested in the essences of both,
practising a combined artistic formula which can be defined as eidos (Hawthorne).
Poe's cosmogonic essay Eureka discloses the author's preocupation for the
enigmatic/cyphered aspects of the Universe. He only describes the mysteries - in a
typically ascendentalist manner - without trying to explain them. In a way, Poe
anticipates the Big-Bang theory, by claiming that the Universe is a three-folded
"phenomenon" which consists of a (primary) "unity", a (moment of) "disintegration" and
(finally) a "reunification". These stages of evolution represent exactly the ascendentalist
(vertical) symbolic movement, confirmed by Poe's literary art, full of ambiguities and
unreliable manifestations, ranging from the mystifications of truth (reality) - operated by
his narrators - to the cryptic metaphors he uses in some allegorical texts. His
Ascendentalism could be ranked as one of downward direction, with an emphasis upon
the depths.
Methodologically speaking, Melville belongs to the same background, begetting
parables that chiefly deepen the mystery of the real world and never explain it. Some of
this novels, like Moby Dick or Pierre, along with his Piazza Tales, abound in allegorical
(vertical) meanings. Melville's orientation, however, is upward, the "riddles" he creates
dealing primarily with the surface level of the enigmatic universe. His Ascendentalism is
one of high perspectives.
Hawthorne combines two dimensions of the method and creates an
Ascendentalism of essences, conceptualized in the book as eidos. His "heroic
psychologies", such as Rappaccinni (from Rappaccinni's Daughter), Hooper (from
The Minister's Black Veil) or Brand (from Ethan Brand), are rebellious,
depersonalized or alienated, according to their reaction to the limitations of the world.
Thus the ultimate image of Ascendentalism is the following one: Poe (depth), Melville
(height), Hawthorne (eidos). Symbolically, this corresponds to the line of a New York
sky-scraper in the horizon.
The intersection of the Transcendentalism with the Ascendentalism confronts us
now with a diversified structure which - since we consider it part of the cultural map of
America - could indicate possible American types that have been manifesting
themselves in the history of the New World. Consequently, we may speak about the
American Romanticism as being an anthropological artifact with deep roots in the
evolution of the spirituality of this space:

This symbolic image of America explains the cultural connotation of the American
Romanticism and, concomitantly, points to the beginning of modernity in the New World.
The subtle phenomenological clash between the West and the East is nothing else but
the allegorical image of the contemporany America. Its spiritual roots seem to be -
symbolically again - romantic.

transcendentaliste rămâne Song of Myself/Cântec despre Sine, unde "sinele" nu
transpersonală a conştiinţei poetice.
persoane, state şi fenomene, concentrând spiritual "energia originară a Naturii"
(Whitman.
Song... 39). Natura paradoxală a Non-Eului poetic derivă
Song... 58). Poetul (entitatea impersonală)
consideră că "meritul meu ultim /.../ este acela de a cuprinde lumi, fără a putea, totuşi,
să mă cuprind pe Mine însumi" (Whitman. Song... 50). El rămâne unul în multiplu,
realitatea transcendentă absolută, unde chiar contradicţiile se topesc, întrucât Sinele
(poetic) este "imens şi conţine multitudini" (Whitman. Song... 81).
spirituale a americanităţii.
Poemul Passage to India/Călătorie spre India situează transcenderea în interiorul
dialecticii continentale.
Numai poetul are
revelaţia acestui circuit şi o transmite metaforic (şi impersonal) "omului comun". Din
perspectiva transcendentalismului poetic, "sfârşitul" istoriei senzoriale funcţionează de
fapt, ca "început" al istoriei spirituale. America - "cel mai mare poem al umanităţii"
(Whitman. Preface 23) - devine pentru scriitor un exemplu insurmontabil.
Transcendentalismul poetic - asemenea celui programatic ori empiric - ne
