•execute the skills needed in Arnis.

What is Arnis?
NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF
ARNIS
• Arnis is the national martial art sport of
Philippines. It is also known as Eskrima and Kali.
Like all martial arts, arnis is primarily defensive,
involving hand-to-hand combat, grappling and
disarming techniques. However, the fighting style
also includes the use of bladed weapons and
sticks, as well as improvised weapons.
NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF
ARNIS
• The baton-like cane is the primary melee tool
used and the weapon used in official arnis
competitions. The primary weapon used in this
traditional martial art sport of Philippines is called
a cane or a baton. The cane or baton varies in
sizes but the original length of it is 28 inches.

• Is the system of Filipino martial arts founded by
the late Remy Presas as a self-defense system.
Remy Presas’ goal was to create an injury-free
training method as well as an effective self-
defense system

• On December 11, 2009, former President
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared Arnis as a
Philippine National sport and should be
included in Physical Education course and
included among the priority sports in Palarong
Pambansa through Republic Act. No. 9850.
First Masters of Arnis
• Lapulapu and his men is known to be the first
master of Arnis because they fought and won the
battle with Magellan not with a hail of bullets but
with wooden instruments, spears and bolos.
Arnes de Mano
• came to be known by this term due to Spanish
influence which was originated from Spanish
word “arnes” which means trappings or defensive
armor.
Proper Gripping
• Hold the stick using your four fingers with the
blade of the palm two-three inches away from the
base of the baston of the stick. The thumb is over
your forefinger. You should have a firm grip or
hold on baston when striking it.

• The same with the other forms of martial arts,
Arnis is also ritual. The two players will bow at
each other to show courtesy and respect.

ATTENTION STANCE
• stand with feet at 45 degrees angle, heels close
together. Holding the sticks at both ends in front of
the body.
OPEN LEG STANCE
• stand with legs spread apart about shoulder width.
STRADDLE LEG STANCE
• This is the same with open leg stance but the feet are
more distance apart with knees bent and hands while
the stick is in fighting position.
CAT STANCE
• This is done where one foot is place at the back while
arms and hands are in fighting stance position.
