2. The parametric equations of a curve are 𝑥 = 2𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝜃 and 𝑦 = √3 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝜃 for 0 ≤ 𝜃 ≤ 𝜋. Find

the equation of normal to the curve at 𝜃 = . [8]

3. State the constants 𝐴 and 𝐵 such that 𝑥 + 1 = 𝐴(𝑥 + 2) + 𝐵. Hence, find

4. Find the solution of the differential equation 𝑥 − 𝑦 = 𝑦ln𝑥, where 𝑥 > 0 and 𝑦 > 0, which

satisfies the condition 𝑦 = 1 when 𝑥 = 1. [7]

Hence, find the Maclaurin expansion for 𝑦 up to the term in 𝑥 . [4]

6. (a) Show that the equation (2𝑥 − 7)𝑒 = 7 has a real root in the interval [3, 4]. [2]

(b) Determine the iterative formula in the form 𝑥 = 𝑃(1 + 𝑒 ), where 𝑃 is a constant.

Hence, find the root of the equation correct to three decimal places with the initial approximation
𝑥 = 3. [5]

(a) Express 𝑉 in terms of 𝑟. [3]
(b) Find the values of ℎ and 𝑟 when 𝑉 is maximum. Hence, calculate the maximum volume of
the cylinder. [8]
(c) Describe what happens to the cylinder when 𝑟 = 0 and 𝑟 = 3. [2]

8. The rate of change of percentage for the population of the black beetles with respect to time, 𝑡, is
given by

dy
= 𝑘(2 − 3𝑦 + 𝑦 )
dx
where 𝑦 is the percentage of the population of the black beetles. Initially, 50% of the population is
black beetles. Research shows that in the fourth year, the population of the black beetles increases
to 80%.

(a) Find the value of 𝑘. [8]

Hence, obtain a relationship between 𝑦 and 𝑡. [2]
(b) Determine the percentage of the black beetles in the 10 year. [3]
(c) Will the population of the black beetles reach 100%? Give your reason. [2]
