22ME3T4 Prerequisites : Basic Mechanical Engineering
PURPOSE: This course aims at study of fundamentals of crystallography, metallurgy,
heat treatment and mechanical properties of materials
INSTRUCTIONAL COURSE OBJECTIVES
1 To study the concepts of basic structure and crystal arrangement of materials.
2 To study the Phase Diagrams.
To study the basic difference between Cast Irons and Steels, their properties

and practical applications
To study the advantages of heat treatment and the method of heat treatment
4
processes.
To study the properties and applications of widely used non-ferrous metals and
5
alloys.
To understand the powder metallurgy processes, the need and application of
6
Ceramic and composite materials.
COURSE OUTCOMES
Students are able to Identify the properties of metals with respect to crystal

structure and grain size.
2 Students are able to Classify, construct and analyze equilibrium diagrams.
Students are able to Classify and Distinguish different types of cast irons, steels

and their Applications.
Students are able to Describe the concept of heat treatment of steels &

strengthening mechanisms.
Students are able to Analyze and distinguish various ferrous, non-ferrousmetals
5
and alloys.
Students are able to Understand the Principles of Powder Metallurgy and

manufacturing Methods of different types of Composites.

UNIT – I
Structure of Metals: Bonds in Solids-Metallic Bond, crystallization of metals, Grain and
grain boundaries, effect of grain boundaries on the Properties of metal / alloys-determination
of grain size. Crystal Imperfections– point, line, surface and volume- Slip and Twinning

Constitution of alloys: Necessity of alloying, types of solid solutions, Hume


Ruther’s rules, intermediate alloy phases, and electron compounds

UNIT –II
Equilibrium Diagrams: Construction of Phase/equilibrium diagrams, phase rule,
equilibrium cooling and heating of alloys, Binary Phase diagrams, Lever rule, coring,
miscibility gaps.
Transformations in the solid state – allotropy, eutectoid, peritectoid reactions, Study of
equilibrium diagrams such as Cu-Ni and Fe-Fe3C (Iron- Carbon equilibrium diagram).

UNIT – III
Ferrous Metals and Alloys:
Cast Irons-Structure and properties of White Cast iron, Malleable Cast iron, grey cast iron,
Spheroidal graphite cast iron, Alloy cast irons.
Steels: Classification of steels, structure and properties of plain carbon steels, Low alloy
steels, Hadfield manganese steels, tool and die steels.

Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys: Structure and properties of Copper and its alloys,
Aluminum and its alloys, Titanium and its alloys.
UNIT – IV
Heat treatment of Alloys: Effect of alloying elements on Fe-Fe3C system, Annealing,
normalizing, hardening, TTT diagrams, tempering, hardenability, surface - hardening
methods, Age hardening treatment, Cryogenic treatment of alloys.

UNIT – V
Powder Metallurgy: Basic processes- Methods of producing metal powders, Compacting-
methods – Sintering - Methods. Sintering Secondary Operations-Sizing, coining, machining
Characteristics and Application of powder Metallurgy.

Composite materials: Classification of composites, various methods of component


manufacture of composites, Types of Composites - metal ceramic mixtures, Metal – Matrix
composites and C – C composites and applications.
