Nug-as Forest stands as a testament to the rich
biodiversity and natural beauty that Cebu. The
Nug-as Forest Reserve is a protected area
located in the Philippines, specifically in the
municipality of Alcoy, Cebu. It's known for its
rich biodiversity, with various species of flora
and fauna thriving within its boundaries.
CAN VISITORS ACCESS TO THE
ATTRACTIONS BE EASILY
ESTABLISHED?

Access to the forest is not as

straightforward as walking into a public
park, tourists may need to arrange
transportation to reach the forest itself,
which may involve walking or using local
modes of transport such as tricycles or
motorcycles
CAN THE ATTRACTIONS BE
PROTECTED AT AN ACCEPTABLE
LEVEL FROM THE IMPACTS OF
VISITATION

Implementing a careful management

strategies such as controlled access and
enforcement of regulations can help avoid
disturbance to bird nesting and feeding,
trekking, camping, and stargazing. Striking a
balance between conservation efforts and
responsible tourism can ensure the
preservation of the reserve's natural
environment while still allowing visitors to
appreciate its beauty.
IS THE AREA FREE OF SECURITY PROBLEMS
AND OR NATURAL HAZARDS THAT CANNOT
BE EFFECTIVELY CONTROLLED BY THE
MANAGEMENT OF THE AREA OR LOCAL
AUTHORITIES

While one of the attractions of visiting the forest is to

see rare bird species, visitors must keep a safe
distance and not disturb the animals. Certain species
could be aggressive or dangerous if they are
approached too closely. While hiking won't be an
issue because it only takes three minutes to reach
the campsite from the jump-off point, visitors should
be aware of the risks associated with outdoor
activities like birdwatching even though the forest is
not vulnerable to natural disasters like landslides or
earthquakes.
DOES THE PROTECTED AREA HAVE SUFFICIENT
MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE AUTHORITY
TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE IMPLEMENTATION AND
MONITORING OF AN ECOTOURISM PROGRAM AT
SITE LEVEL?

Under the Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Program,

guardians are tasked with defending the inhabitants of
Nug-as Forest Reserve against poachers, hunters, and
reckless citizens. The forest is patrolled by a group of
community volunteers who work to maintain its
cleanliness and serve as a place of refuge for all of its
inhabitants. The Nug-as Forest has management
authority which is likely a combination of government
agencies and local stakeholders who ensures adequate
resources, staff training, and infrastructure to manage the
ecotourism effectively.
IS THERE A REASONABLE
EXPECTATION THAT INITIAL
FUNDING NEEDED TO DEVELOP
ECOTOURISM WILL BE AVAILABLE?

Initial capital is expected as this location requires special

measures such as: Maintaining the balance of nature and
protecting the environment, including updating the general
ecotourism activity management plan and developed
ecotourism management plans, and paying appropriate
amounts to wildlife authorities for ecosystem restoration and
regeneration to exterminate wild animals. Construction of
nature center facilities and provision of equipment for
ecotourism activities will also be a component of the initial
funding.
ARE THE PROTECTED AREA MANAGERS,
TOUR OPERATORS, AND COMMUNITIES
WILLING TO CONFORM TO ECOTOURISM
GUIDELINES, I.E LOW IMPACT, SMALL
GROUPS, IMPACT MONITORING, WORKING
WITH AND ACTIVELY INVOLVING
COMMUNITIES?

Yes, they are prepared to take all necessary

measures to lessen any threat or damage to the
forest. They engage in a great deal of activity to
continuously enhance their leadership and
power. Additionally, they are amenable to any
modifications that are made to ensure that
visitors have the safest and best possible
experience .
WILL VISITATION IMPROVE
BIODIVERSITY HEALTH OR REDUCE
THREATS TO CONSERVATION TARGETS
By managing appropriately and keeping the forest from being overly
crowded, visits can be beneficial. Positively, responsible tourism can
encourage support for protected areas, increase money for conservation
initiatives, and increase public understanding of conservation-related
concerns.
