Branch: Aerospace Section/Group: 21BAS 1-B
Semester: VI Date of Performance:
Subject Name: COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS LAB
Subject Code: 21ASP-316

AIM: Grid independence study and convergence test for laminar flow through a pipe.

OBJECTIVE: To perform simulation in a two-dimensional pipe using Ansys Fluent after performing grid study

SOFTWARE USED: ANSYS Workbench

PROCEDURE:

Step 1: Open Workbench.

Step 2: Double click on Fluid Flow (FLUENT).
Step 3: Right click on geometry and select new design modeler geometry.
Step 4: Select Sketching > Draw >Rectangle. Draw a rectangle with one corner at the origin in XY plane.
Step 5: Select Dimensions > General. Give the dimensions as specified above in geometry. Step 6: Concept >
Surfaces from Sketches, select the sketch by left clicking on Sketch1 in the Tree Outline and hit Apply.
Step 7: Click Generate. This will create a surface.
Step 8: Close new design modeler and go to meshing.
Step 9: Right click on Mesh then select Insert > Face Meshing.
Step 10: Select your geometry by clicking the yellow box which says No Selection, then click on the geometry
surface, and click Apply.
Step 11: Select an edge then, right click on Mesh then select Insert > Sizing.
Step 12: Give number of divisions as required in Edge Sizing Dialogue box, then click on Generate Mesh.
Step 13: Change the edge names by selecting the edge, then right click on the edge and select Create Named
Selection. Name left, right and rest of the two edges as inlet, outlet and wall respectively.
Step 14: Now close Mesh tab and update project.
Step 15: Open setup. Go to Setup > General. Choose Axisymmetric option. Step 16: Fill the rest of the details as
provided in the table above.
Step 17: Give the inlet velocity as 0.2 m/s.
Step 18: Go to Solution > Solution Initialization. Switch to Standard Initialization and click Initialize.
Step 19: Solution > Run Calculation. Change Number of Iterations to 1000 and click Calculate.
Step 20: Once the solution converges, click OK.
Step 21: Now open Results. Create a contour and observe the Pressure, Temperature, Mach number, Density,
Velocity change along the length of the pipe.
