ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
UBC’s Point Grey Campus is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the
xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. The land it is situated on has always been a place of
learning for the Musqueam people, who for millennia have passed on in their culture, history,
and traditions from one generation to the next on this site.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides students with an understanding of relationships between literature and
media. It further provides them with an understanding of literary genre, and of the ways in
which different media function. There are modules on the electronic book, on the relationship
between photography and narration, on information culture, on media history, on media
metafictions, and on Indigenous media. In addition, the course encourages students in reading
and writing strategies that will enhance their ability to communicate ideas effectively.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
The course consists of lectures on Mondays and Wednesdays and a tutorial, taught by Teaching
Assistants, on Fridays. Assignments are written in the tutorial. All lectures are accompanied by
PowerPoint presentations, which are also posted on Canvas.

LEARNING MATERIALS
The course texts (listed below in the syllabus) are available in the UBC Bookstore, in used book
stores, as well as online. The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage is available as a
hardback ($55), paperback ($25), or as an electronic text ($18).

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING
Student assessment is based on an in-class essay (15%); two take-home essays (20%; 25%);
exam (30%); and tutorial participation (10%).

UNIVERSITY POLICIES
UBC provides resources to support student learning and to maintain healthy lifestyles but
recognizes that sometimes crises arise and so there are additional resources to access,
including those for survivors of sexual violence. UBC values respect for the person and ideas
of all members of the academic community. Harassment and discrimination are not
tolerated nor is suppression of academic freedom. UBC provides appropriate
accommodation for students with disabilities and for religious observances. UBC values
academic honesty and students are expected to acknowledge the ideas generated by others
and to uphold the highest academic standards in all of their actions. Details of the policies
and how to access support are available on the UBC Senate website. Pay particular attention
to the information on plagiarism. If you are uncertain about academic standards concerning
citation and plagiarism, consult the course instructor and/or teaching assistants. You may
also consult the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication: cwsc.info@ubc.ca;
https://writing.library.ubc.ca/. Note further that the use of AI applications such as chatbots
(for example, Chat GPT) to complete an assignment can violate UBC’s policies on academic
integrity. If you have questions about the use of such apps, consult the course instructor
and/or your teaching assistant.

IN-TERM CONCESSIONS
The course professor will provide one or more options to students who miss an assignment
or deadline. Students must contact me via email as soon as they are aware they may need a
concession.
