SELF-LEARNING HOME TASK (SLHT)

Subject: CSS Grade 7 Level 7 Quarter 2 Week 3

MELC: Performing Computer Operations Competency Code: __________

School: Bitoon National Vocational High School District: Dumanjug II

General Direction: Do not write anything in the Self-Learning Home Task. Write your answers on
separate sheet of paper or activity notebook.

A.Readings/Discussions

Computer education plays a vital role in the academic success of the students. Therefore, it is
important for the students to understand the different components of a computer system. These
components are hardware, software and peopleware/ liveware. Each component plays an essential part
and will not function properly without each other.

A Computer System is more than just a Computer. It is a combination of “components

working together to perform a specific task”.

A. Hardware is the physical, touchable, electronic, and mechanical components of a computer system.

Main hardware components of a computer system

1. System Unit- is the part of the

computer that houses the primary
devices that perform operations and
produce result for complex
computations. It consists of the
following internal components;
Motherboard, Microprocessor, Memory
Chips, Buses, Ports, Expansion Slots,
and Cards.

While the system case is

known as computer chassis. it
houses all the parts of the system unit
and the main purpose of it is to
protect your computer’s internal
components.

2. Motherboard / Mainboard / System Board - The

computer's main circuit board that allows other computer parts
to be connected to one another. It also contains all the
components and circuits which run the computer.
3. CPU (Central Processing Unit)- or microprocessor is known as the “brain” of a computer system. It
performs all the instructions and calculations that are needed and manages the flow of information through
a computer.

4. Primary storage (internal storage, main memory, or

memory) is the working storage space of the computer that
contains data, processing instructions and processed data
(information) waiting for secondary storage. There are two types
of memory: ROM (Read Only Memory) ROM and RAM
(Random Access Memory).

• RAM is a type of volatile memory. Data in RAM is not

permanently written. When you power off your computer the data
stored in RAM is deleted.

• ROM is a type of non- volatile memory. Data in ROM is

permanently written and is not erased when you power off your computer.

5. Expansion Bus- A bus is a data pathway between multiple

components of the hardware within or outside of a device. It not
only connects the CPU parts to each other but also connects the
CPU to other essential hardware.

There are several different types of expansion buses with diverse

features, such as:

• Industry Standard Architecture (ISA)

• Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)
• Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)

6. Adapters/Expansion Cards – It referred to as an add-on

card, expansion board, internal card, interface adapter, or card,
an expansion card is a printed circuit board that fits into an
expansion bus/slot on a desktop computer.
An expansion card is used to give a computer additional
capabilities and often used to permit upgrading to a new
different hardware. These are
Sound Card, Video Card, Network Interface Card (NIC) and
Modem (Modular-Demodulator)

7. Hard Disk Drive (HDD)- A magnetic storage disk that is

mounted inside the computer is also known as hard drive. The
hard drive acts as permanent data storage. The hard disk is
normally configured as the C: drive on a Windows computer and
includes the operating system and applications
8. Power Supply Unit (PSU)- Installed next to the motherboard, in the back corner of the PC case. It
converts 120v AC (standard house power) to DC voltages that other PC components use. It also provides
the necessary power source needed by the computer to work.

Solid State Drive (SSD) – is a storage device that can be used internal
or external part, SSDs uses either IDE or SATA interface same as HDD but
the main difference between HDDs and SSDs is that SDDs do not have
mechanical moving parts such as the disk platters inside HDDs.

9. Optical Disc Drive (ODD)- uses a

laser light to read
data from or write data to an optical disc.
There are three types of optical disc
• Compact Disk (CD)
• Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)
• Blu-ray Disc (BD)

 Input Devices - Accepts data and instructions from the user or from another computer system

Two types of Input devices

1. Keyboard Entry- Data is entered through a keyboard into the computer.
2. Direct Entry - A form of input that does not require data to be keyed by someone sitting at a keyboard.
Direct-entry devices create machine-readable data on paper, or magnetic media, or feed it directly into the
computer’s CPU

Three Categories of Direct Entry Devices

1. Pointing Devices- An input device used on the screen to move the pointer (cursor).
Examples are mouse, touch screen, light pen, and digitizer tablet.

2. Scanning Devices-A device capable of reading paper-printed text or diagrams and

converting the information into a form that the user can use. Examples are image
scanner and bar code reader.

3. Voice- Input Devices- Audio input devices also known as voice or speech recognition
systems that allow a user to send audio signals to a computer for processing, recording,
or executing commands. Audio input devices like microphones allow users to speak to
the machine to record a voice message or navigate applications.

Output Devices- Any computer hardware component that shows results after the computer processes the
input data entered.

1.Computer Display Monitor- Using text and graphics, it displays information in

visual form. The part of the monitor showing the information is called the
terminal for screen or video display.
2.LCD Projectors- Utilize two sheets of polarizing material with a liquid
crystal solution between them. The electrical current that passes through
the liquid aligns the crystals so that light cannot pass through them.

3.Smart Board- A type of display board with a touch-sensitive, transparent

panel that covers the board, like a touch screen.

4.Printer- A tool which prints text or images on paper. The five types
of printer are: 1. Inkjet or Bubble-Jet printer, 2. Laser printer, 3. LCD
and LED printer, 4. Line printer, and 5. Thermal printer.

5. Speakers- Used to play sound. These can be built into the system unit
or attached to cables. Speakers let you hear music from your machine
and hear sound effects

Ports- External connecting sockets on the outside of the computer

Cables and Wires- A cable is usually two or more wires running side by side and bonded, twisted or
braided together to form a single assembly, but may also refer to a solid, heavy cord.

B. Software is the collection of instructions (also known as a program) t hat direct the hardware for
successful operations. Two main types of software.

1. System Software- Any software required to support the production

or execution of application programs, but which is not specific to
any application. Common operating systems include Windows, the
Macintosh OS, OS/2 and UNIX.

2. Application Software- Designed to assist the user in performing

single or multiple tasks. The following are some examples of
application software are word processing software, spreadsheet
software, database management software, graphic software, etc.

C. Peopleware or Liveware is simply the user of a computer. Before a computer actually works, it
requires the computer user to push of a switch button, a press on a key or a click on a button. This makes
the computer user an important part of a computer system. Students, Parent, Teachers, Accountant,
Engineer, Doctor and other professional who uses computer are considered as Peopleware.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Occupational Health and
Safety (OHS) Policy- Students of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) should know how to
behave while employed in the computer laboratory, as well as enforce a secure way to execute all tasks.
Security standards should be taught early and adheres to any electrical and electronic product, including
personal computers and their peripherals.

Personal Safety While Working with PC’s

Computer hardware can be unsafe and if you don't meet proper safety instructions while dealing with PC's,
you or others can be injured or even killed. Some precautionary steps to be taken before operating with
any electronic system are as follows:
1. To help reduce the risk of being shocked or seriously injured in an electrical incident, wear shoes with
non-conductive rubber soles.
2. Do not work on components that are plugged into their power source.
3. Do not remove expansion cards from a computer when it is turned on.
4. Remove jewelries when working inside any computer related equipment.
5. Be sure not to mix electronic components and water
