Understanding about Design Thinking

A primary purpose of design thinking is to summarize and synthesis the research on

design thinking to better understand its characteristics and processes as well as the
difference between novice and expert design thinker. It is very important for upcoming
engineers like us to develop critical thinking skills, working and managing a team,
completing work on or before time, enhancing the way to look at things, approaching an d
facing problems with different point of view etc. Design thinking helps us enhance and
improve our skills.
7
Importance of Design Thinking

Introduction of this project is very important in lives of beginners like us. This project
makes us aware about how things work in actual world. Firstly a team is chosen by us,
we have to work in that team throughout the project which obviously improves our
management and team-working skills. This project helps us to develop critical thinking
skills, the way we approach towards a problem also become more simplified and
distinct. Throughout our project we constantly solve and fix different kind of problems,
hence enhance problem facing and solving capability. A secondary communication
skill also improves. With help of this project, we got a good knowledge about designing
which would be helpful in future. Also it helps to apply the findings from the literature
regarding the application of design thinking to our education system.

CHAPTER 2. LITERATURE REVIEW

July 5, 2007 The problem of keeping your mobile phone fully charged when miles away from a
conventional electricity source is being tackled by UK wind turbine specialists, Gotwind.

 The Orange wind charger prototype is a small, portable tent mounting mobile phone
charger that uses stored kinetic energy to fully charge a mobile phone in up to two hours.

 Weighing only 150 grams, the wind generator may be a convenient answer for your next
camping trip and adds another option to the growing number of ecologically friendly
phone accessories such as solar powered phone chargers (which have limited
functionality at night and in colder climates) and wind-up units.

The Gotwind wind charger uses a conventional horizontal axis wind turbine and has a propeller
diameter of 30cm. The turbine then activates a 3-phase alternator producing about half a watt of
power, which can be filtered into a rechargeable battery for use anywhere.

 Mobile phones can then be plugged into a control box on the unit for charging. Gotwind
have anticipated that most makes and models of phone can then be fully charged in 1-2
hours.

 An additional feature of this clever portable generator is a tent mounting system that
consists of four legs that allow you to secure it to most modern tents.

 You will never be away from a fully charged phone, even when away from all
civilization, even though that might be the reason you went camping in the first place!

CHAPTER 3. EMPATHY MAPPING

Domain Selection

While adventuring on the forest areas we have got into the problem of not having enough
batteries in our phones and also we have wind and mechanical energy but we need the
devices which can converts that into electrical energy and gives us phone charging as
output.

AEIOU Sheet and its Summary

Here AEIOU stands for activities, Environment, Interaction, Object and

User. The summary contains all the points of AEIOU

• Activities

We were reading about the major reasons for the person getting lost in forest area while the
battery is dead , and we realized most of them were caused due to the getting inside the
forest to explore more. We researched a lot by going through the various accidents related
articles cum cases in newspapers and online portals.
We also came across a few people who met with an incident and we got a chance to talk
to them, and we found that most of the incidents were caused due to not having power
supply at the forest and also due to the reaching at place which is too far from road.

• Environment

There were many things that were creating environmental problems. One of the major
problems are dirt and rain. As due to the dirt the cyclist can’t move his cycle faster to
move of the forest. Also due to the rain the roads become slippery in which we need to be
cautious also we need to be out safe and sound. Due to this the people get stuck in the
forest and without mobile phone it is very hard to move out as we will get all the tress
similar and we tend to mover in circular road only. So to move out we need to have
phone which is having some battery.
10
• Interaction

There was a lot of interaction scene going on with the cyclist and engineer. They tend to
find solution to solve this problem. Then we have taken help from the mobile repairer
and they helps us to make circuit for charging with the motor rotation. We need to
interacts with so many people at a times to get a proper feedback also get extra help for
our model.

• Objects

There were so many objects at the forests. You can see the tress and different types of
animals at the forest. There are so many rocks in between the roads. Mountains are
present at the forest we went to hilly areas for adventuring. There are various types of
animals such as monkey, wild cats, dogs, also sometimes wild animals which can attack
us.

• Users

The person who uses this are Environmentalist and cyclist who are adventuring in the
forest and also enjoying the nature.

Relevant and Irrelevant Props

The Wind energy: Now a days vehicles are equipped with changing equipment but
normal vehicles like bicycle and two vehicles do not have this feature. So, to overcome
this problem and to make charging a on the go process a new object or equipment
changes with wind energy has been introduced. In this setup a fan is used to change to
wind that makes the fan to rotate and change the mobile. So, with the help of this
equipment or the charging can be done with help of wind energy.
Fan that energy generates: A setup in which a fan used wind energy to generate electricity
which will eventually help inn changing equipment like mobile. This setup can be
installed. The cost to develop this product is very low that will help to make it on larger
scale with low capital.

CHAPTER 8. REVERSE ENGINEERING

Wind force:
The magnitude and distribution of wind velocity are the key elements in determining
wind design forces. Mountainous or highly developed urban areas provide a rough
surface, which slows wind velocity near the surface of the earth and causes wind velocity
to increase rapidly with height above the earths surface.

Polymer composite:
Polymer composites are polymer materials with a reinforcement, in which the polymer
acts as a matrix resin that penetrates the reinforcement bundles and bonds to the
reinforcement..

Mini CPU:
A small computer that is intermediate between a microcomputer and a mainframe in size,
speed, and capacity, that can support time-sharing, and that is often dedicated to a single
application.

USB module:
USB was designed to standardize the connection of peripherals to personal computers,
both to communicate with and to supply electric power. It has largely replaced
interfaces such as serial ports and parallel ports.

Solar Panel:
Solar panels are those devices which are used to absorb the sun's rays and convert them into
electricity or heat. Description: A solar panel is actually a collection of solar (or photovoltaic)
cells, which can be used to generate electricity through photovoltaic effect. These cells are
arranged in a grid-like pattern on the surface of solar panels.

Fan:
A fan is a powered machine used to create a flow of air. A fan consists of a rotating arrangement
of vanes or blades, generally made of wood, plastic, or metal, which act on the air.
24
CHAPTER 9.DIACHRONIC AND SYNCHRONIC ANALYSIS

Understanding about Diachronic Analysis

But in other countries, such as Denmark, the USA and Germany, the development of wind
power was moving ahead. Higher energy prices than in Sweden and market incentives were
important driving forces. In the early 1990s, the issue of climate change began to be increasingly
relevant. Fossil and non-renewable fuels like coal and oil were increasingly questioned. Interest
in the development of wind power was reawakened in Sweden. One sign of this was the
government's introduction of investment support for wind turbines in 1991. Vattenfall now
resumed activities on Gotland, and established a number of other smaller wind turbines along the
Swedish coast. One example is the facility at Lysekil, which went into operation in 1993.

 Solar Panels
Compared to the lower-tier economy panels that have dominated the industry for years now, high-
grade panels can generate up to 25% more electricity. There are several ongoing research projects
into the possible increase of solar panels’ efficiency. A laboratory experiment that involved
advanced solar cells showed a promising power efficiency of 46%. Although this kind of panels is
highly efficient, the constituent materials make them expensive to fabricate commercially. As far
as the cost of implementation goes, solar panels have become more affordable by 65% within the
last decade alone.
25

Understanding about Synchronic Analysis

1) Your foot pushes on the pedal.

2) As the pedal moves down, it pushes forward and backward which cause rotation in the
wheel.
3) As the wheel rotates in one direction the fan in the prototype rotates as the object is moving.
4) Now due to the fan rotation the fan generates mechanical energy which then transfer from
USB circuit.
5) USB module converts the mechanical energy into the Electrical energy and also we get
help from solar panels.
6) Due to change in electrical energy the mobile phone started charging.
26
CHAPTER 10.SCAMPER TOOL

SUBSTITUE:
We substituted raw fan use to fan and solar power use for generation of electrical energy.

COMBINE:
For some vehicle types can combine both the technologies in one vehicle to provide
more safety.

ADAPT:
We can also provide casing on the fan to ensure more safety and the prototype
cover in the box rather than opened.

MODIFY:
Instead of the small fan we have modified it to the medium size fan to increase the
power.

MAXIMIZE/MINIMIZE
We can select the type of battery, as the battery is the main component for the
generation of electricity.

PUT TO OTHER USE

We have use the solar panels in the prototype as they are ecological and also
they don’t provide emission to any harmful gases.

ELIMINATION
The use of very big module is avoid to provide very fast charging as for big
module we need high mechanical power which we usually don’t get from the
bicycle and also there is cause of fire hazards so we eliminated its use.

REVERSIBILITY AND REARRANGEMENT

The direction of rotation of which can be reversed, as the fan is connected to the USB module
which connects it to the Wire to the mobile phone. Rearrangements can be done as there are
many places where this prototype is places and we need to ensure that maximum amount of air
got flow inside the fan to gain output.
27

CHAPTER 11:DESIGN CALCULATION

There is no design calculation required for the wind power mobile charger.

Introduction
With the rapid industrialization development and exploitation of natural resources. Many times
condition occurs which result in non charging of our daily use gadgets and mobile. But this
problem can be tackled by using renewable energy resources[1-5]Technologies like solar
charger, charging pins powered through automobile battery and gadgets through hand operated
dynamo through a combination of many gears are used for charging mobile phones.
at present we have come with a solution of maintaining sustainability of energy stored in the
phone battery by “Wind Driven Mobile Battery Charger” [6-7]. This concept utilises wind
generated electrical energy to charge the mobile phones battery.
Materials use
A. Propeller A propeller is a t y p e o f fan that t r a n s m i t s p o w e r b y converting
rotational motion into thrust. A pressure difference is produced between the forward and
rear surfaces of the airfoil -shaped blade, and a fluid (such as air or water) is accelerated
behind the blade. Propeller dynamics can be modeled b y b o t h Bernoulli and Newton’s
t h i r d l a w . A propeller is often colloquially known as screw. The number of blades
decides the rotational speed of the propeller and differs with the pitch angle and the angle
between the blades.
B. Charging Regulator Circuit : The bypass capacitor is hooked up at the output terminal of
the DC generator .The capacitor is there to filter out any noise coming from the voltage
source (the generator). The voltage regulator I.C will work best if a clean D.C is fed to it.
To avoid any A.C noise (ripple) imposed on the D.C line voltage, the capacitor in essence
act as a bypass capacitor. It shorts the A.C signal of the voltage signal (which is noise on
the voltage signal) to ground and only the D.C portion of the signal goes to the regulator.

Conclusions
In this a wind battery charger has been investigated to charge the mobile phone or battery while
travelling .This technology can help to meet the emergency power requirement when grid
electricity is not available. The wind driven mobile charger is also portable, cost-effective and
energy efficient .By further suitable modifications, the system could be used to charge gadgets
for daily use. In the Future work charging of laptop and high power gadgets will be
accomplished.
