Choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. A mole in chemistry is ______.

a. a chemical b. an animal c. a number d. a spot on the skin

2. A mole is used to
a. count b. dig c. measure d. mark

3. The equivalent number for a mole is

a. 12.011 b. 1,000,000,000 c. 6.02 x 1023 d. 65, 000, 000

4. One mole of different substance will have ________

a. the same mass b. different masses c. the same volume d. the same density

5. A convenient way of counting particles is by ________.

a. counting each particles individually by means of a modern microscope
b. counting the particles by a dozen using a platform balance
c. counting the particles by mole using a platform balance and periodic table of elements
d. all of the above

B. Fill in the Blanks.

Problem 1: One mole of water (H2O) is equal to 6.02 x 1023_ H2O molecules. One mole of water contains
1.20x1024 hydrogen atoms and 6.02 x 1023 oxygen atoms. So there are a total of 1.81x 1024 atoms in one mole
of water.

Problem 2: If one mole of C12H22O11 molecules were separated into atoms of various elements, there would be
___12__ moles of C atoms, __22___ moles of H atoms and ___11__ moles of O atom.

Problem 3: If one mole of calcium has a mass of 40 g, one mole of C has a mass of 12 g, and 1mole of O has a
mass of 16g, the mass of 1 mole of CaCO3 is 100g.

Day 4 : Reviewing previous lesson through:

“The Molar Mass Relay”

Materials: Chalk, eraser, periodic table

Mechanics:

Divide the class into three. The students will work as a team in a relay race format in order to solve for the
molar mass of given substances.

On your signal, the first student from each team will pick a slip of paper randomly from his team’s cup and solve
for the molar mass of the substance written on it. He can bring periodic table of elements but not calculator
during the game. For convenience in this game, the molar mass of each element is rounded off to the nearest
whole number. As soon as he is done with his answer, the next player turns. There must be a time limit of at
least 10 minutes if you will give them 10 strips of paper. Each cup contains the same set of substances. There
must be no coaching of answers as well as cheating from other teams. Check the answers. The winning team is
the one that finishes correctly all of the problems the fastest and will be given an incentive.

Cut-outs:

NaOH (sodium hydroxide) CH4 (methane)

HCl (hydrochloric acid) SiO2 (silicon dioxide)
H2SO4 (sulphuric acid) Al(OH)3 (aluminium hydroxide)
Fe2SO4 (ferrous sulphate) N2 (nitrogen gas)
CaCO3 (Calcium carbonate/chalk) MgCl2 (magnesium chloride)
Answers:

NaOH (sodium hydroxide)= 40 g/mol CH4 (methane) = 16 g/mol

HCl (hydrochloric acid) = 36 g/mol SiO2 (silicon dioxide) = 60 g/mol

H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) = 98 g/mol Al(OH)3 (aluminium hydroxide) = 126 g/mol

Fe2SO4 (ferrous sulfate) =152 g/mol N2 (nitrogen gas) =28 g/mol

CaCO3 (Calcium carbonate/chalk)= 100 g/mol MgCl2 (magnesium chloride) = 94 g/mol

Day 4: Establishing a purpose for the lesson by showing a picture of gold medal.

A pure gold medal has a mass of 591 g.

1.) How many moles of gold atoms are there in the gold medal if its molar mass is 197 g? (3 moles)

2.) How many atoms of gold are present? (1.81 x10 23 atoms)

Day 5: Establishing a purpose for the lesson by showing a picture of a golden cup.

Tell students that this golden cup contains 3.01 x1024 atoms.

Questions:

1. How many moles of gold are there? (5 moles)

2. What is the mass of the golden cup? (The molar mass of gold is 197 g, so the mass is 985 g)

DAY 5: Finding practical applications of concepts and skills and daily living

Question:

Ask what must be the mass of methane (CH4) required to produce 5 moles of CO2 if burning 1 mole
of methane produces 1 mole of carbon dioxide. How many molecules of CO2 will be released with this
mass of methane? Ask how they think it will affect the environment, and what action must be done.

Answer: If their mole ratio is 1:1, there will be the same no. of moles of CH4 that will be needed. There
are 5 moles of CH4 if there are 5 moles of CO2. If the molar mass of CH4 is 16 g, the mass of 5 moles
of methane is 80 g. Burning 80 g of methane will release 5 moles of CO2 equivalent to 3.01 x 1024
molecules. Burning this amount of methane is harmful to the environment because it will greatly
increase the concentration of CO2 into the atmosphere. It is a greenhouse gas which can intensify
global warming and make climate changes even worst. As much as possible, we must limit our use of
fossil fuels and other activities that releases CO2.

Day 6: Part I of the Activity : “The Mole Relay”

Divide the class into three.

The Students will work as a team in a relay race format in order to solve for the problems given.

Materials: Chalk, eraser, calculator, periodic table.

Mechanics: On your signal, the first student from each team will pick a slip of paper randomly from his team’s
cup and solve the problem written on it. He can bring periodic table of elements and calculator during the game.
As soon as he is done with his answer, the next player turns. There must be a time limit of at least 10 minutes
if you will give them 10 strips of paper. Each cup contains the same set of substances. For convenience in this
game, the molar mass of each element is rounded off to the nearest whole number. There must be no coaching
of answers as well as cheating from other groups.

Check the answers. The winning team is the one who has the highest no. of correct answers. They will be given
an incentive. All solutions must be shown on the board for their answers to be counted.

Note: The problems to be used in the game can be changed by the teacher according to the skills of the
students.
