TOPIC 2 – Kinematics

Card 1
1. State the four SUVAT or Kinematic equations.

2. Derive an equation that has the variables s,v,a,t only.

3. The displacement - time graph for a moving object is shown.

(a) What is the object's displacement after 1.5 s?

(b) When is the object travelling towards the origin?

(c) What is the velocity at t = 0.5 s?

(d) What is the velocity at t = 7 s?

(e) How far has the object travelled after 12 s?

(f) What is the final displacement of the object?

(g) What is the average speed for the 12 s journey?

(h) What is the average velocity for the 12 s journey?

(i) Sketch a velocity-time graph for the journey, include the important values on the axes?
4. A train pulls out of a station and accelerates steadily for 20 s until it reaches
8.0 m s-1. It then travels at a constant speed for 100 s, then decelerates uniformly to rest in 30 s.
(a) Draw the velocity-time graph for the journey.

(b) Calculate the acceleration and the distance travelled in each part of the journey.

(c) Calculate the average speed for the journey.

5. A vehicle travelling at 6.0 m s-1 accelerates uniformly at 1.75 m s-2 for 4.5 s.

(a) Calculate the final velocity of the vehicle.

(b) Calculate the distance travelled by the vehicle while accelerating.

(c) Calculate the average velocity of the vehicle during the 4.5 s interval

6. A plane on a runway takes 16.2 s over a distance of 1200 m to take off from zero initial speed.
Assuming constant acceleration during take-off, calculate:

(a) the speed on leaving the ground.

(b) the acceleration during take-off.

7. Why is Velocity a vector?

8. Fig. 1.1. shows the path of a car as it travels around a right-angled bend.

The car travels from point A to point B in 7.6s at a constant speed of 25 ms-1.
(a) Calculate the distance the car travels in 7.6 s.

(b) Sketch the diagram and show the displacement (using a vector) from A to B.

(c) Using a labelled vector triangle, calculate the magnitude and direction of the CHANGE in
velocity of the car as it moves from A to B.

(d) Explain why there is acceleration as the car moves from A to B.

9. A bullet of mass 80 g travelling at 110 m s-1 penetrates a tree trunk to a depth of 65 mm.
Calculate:
(a) the impact time of the bullet.

(b) the average deceleration of the bullet.

10.A student drops a stone into a well and hears it hit the bottom of the well 1.8s later.
Assuming that g = 9.81 m s-2 and that the effect of air resistance is negligible, calculate:

(a) the distance fallen by the stone.

(b) the speed of the stone immediately before impact.
