Safety is the condition of being protected

from harm or other non-desirable

outcomes.

Safety
Precautions in
operation of CM
Causes of Accidents
 Failure to fulfill prescribed safety control

 Defective maintenance or repair (aging & damage parts)

 Improper inspection

 Mistake in operation methods

 Unskilled operator or Carelessness of operator

 Inaccurate instructions by supervisor

 Insufficient communication between worker

Safety hint
 Take care of your health, do not drive when tired.

 Wear well PPE (helmet, safety shoes, working cloths,

googles, mask, gloves etc.)

 Learn the safety rules and cautions about work site

 Learn about the use of safety devices on your own machine

 Read the operation and maintenance manual carefully

 Never allow any person other than the operator to ride on the
machine during operation
Before Starting operation
 Examine the lay of land and kind of soil at work site.

 Inspect Leakage (fuel, lubrication and hydraulic system)

 Check the shoe bolt are not loose and no other parts are damage or
missing

 Use handrail/steps when getting up or off the machine.

 Do not leave tools other than the tool box (not in floor or operator cabin)

 Wipe off any grease, oil or mud from handrail, floor or levers
Before Starting operation
 Adjust operator’s seat at most comfortable position so for easy steering

and braking.

 Check and fasten seat belt

 Sound the horn to warn the workers near the machine

 Inspect the inside engine room and remove any dead leaves or paper

 Check that all the control levers at “NEUTRAL” or “HOLDING” position

After starting engine
 Confirm that all gauge and warning devices are functioning properly
and gauge reading within prescribed range.

 Check the play and travel of each lever and pedal

 Move the machine slowly and listen engine sound

 Operate the gear shift lever and check the travel speed for forward and
reverse

 Check the steering of machine by turning right and left

During operation (important)
 Always concentrate, not to be distracted

 In dangerous/restricted places, confirms weather it is safe to continue

work

 Work area should be safe as possible, thus reduces operator fatigue

 Machine should be operated within speed limits

 Never do speeding, sudden starting and turning, snaking, coasting

 When driving keep blade 40-50 cm above the ground

 Be aware of machining capacity (beyond capacity)

During operation
 Judge the machine condition for any changes in gauge, sound, vibration,
exhaust gas color, response of control lever.

 If a machine breaks down and need tow, first confirm that brakes are
working properly then tow

 When continuing operation after rain, remember that condition are

changes from those before the rain, so proceed with caution

 After earthquakes check the ground condition

 Operation on uneven ground, drive at slow speed and avoid sudden turn
During operation
 Whenever possible avoid travelling over large rocks, fallen trees, tree
stumps and other obstacles.

 Never mount over obstacle, never disengage one steering clutch to

travel over obstacle

 When operation at the edge of cliff or on line shoulder of a road:

▪ Do not approach the edge of cliff or road shoulder

▪ At the instant when the soil is dumped over the cliff, the machine speed
increases, so press decelerator or fuel control lever to reduce speed
and return the gear shift lever to “NEUTRAL”
During operation
▪ when dumping soil over a cliff, dump the first excavated soil without
dumping it over, and use each succeeding excavated soil to push the
previous soil over

 When Operation on slope

▪ Always drive directly up or down it (not cross diagonally or horizontally)

▪ Avoid turning the machine

▪ When going down a slope, use engine as brakes, if necessary use the
steering brakes as well

▪ Never coast down a slope with the gear shift lever in “Neutral”
During operation
▪ If engine stalls on a slope, first use brakes to stop the machine, then
before starting the engine return the gear shift lever to “Neutral”

 When operation in water or muddy area

▪ Check bed soil condition, depth and flow speed of water

▪ If machine stuck in mud then it useless to increase engine speed,

causing the track to spin, in such case just raise the blade to reduce the
load and drive out slowly.

▪ When passing through narrow space, be careful of the side and

overhead clearance
During operation
 When operation at night, be sure to arrange proper lightening system

 When visibility is below safety level stop operation

 When operation in snow or cleaning snow

▪ Never use the steering brake to stop the machine suddenly on slopes,
lowering the working equipment is a far safe effective way of stopping
Parking
 Parking should be at flat and firm ground

 Park at specific safe place where there is no danger of rockfall or

landslides

 When park at downhill, lower the blade so that it cut slightly into the
ground

 When parking return the control lever at Neutral

 Lower the blade and ripper to ground

 Put the safety lever in the “lock” position
