Study Problems 1

Q1: Determine the magnitude of the resultant force acting on the bracket by resolving the forces
into rectangular components and its direction measured clockwise from the positive x axis. Use
the tabular format similar to worked out during the class hours!
Answ:
𝑅 = 454,7 𝑁; 𝜙 = 9,1°

Q2: Determine the magnitude of the force F and its direction  if the resultant force is along the
positive y axis with a magnitude of 400 N.
Answ:
𝐹 = 1034.64 𝑁; 𝜃 = 45.51°

Q3: The cables AB and AC are attached to the top of the transmission tower. The tension in cable
AC is 8 kN. Determine the required tension T in cable AB such that the resultant downward force
at point A.
a. Graphically ,
b. using geometry.
Answ:
𝑇 = 5.68 𝑘𝑁
𝑅 = 10.21 𝑘𝑁

Q4: Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown. Knowing that P = 500 N,
determine the tension in cable AC and in cable BC by constructing a force triangle and using
trigonometry.
a. If  is 90o
b. If  is 60o
Answ:

Q5: Knowing that the tension in cable AB is 1425 N (directed from A to B), and the tension in
cable AC is 2130 N, (directed from C to A), determine the resultant of the forces at A (magnitude
and direction cosines).
Answ: R = 3166 N; cos 𝜃𝑥 = 141.4°; cos 𝜃𝑦 = 58.6°; cos 𝜃𝑧 = 107.1°

Q6:
a. Determine the forces FAB and FAC in cartesian vector form.
b. Determine the magnitude of the resultant force and its coordinate direction angles.
Answ:
a. 𝐹⃑𝐴𝐵 = (74.28 𝑁)𝑖̂ + (148.56 𝑁)𝑗̂ − (111.42 𝑁)𝑘̂
𝐹⃑𝐴𝐶 = (−77.17 𝑁)𝑖̂ − (102.90 𝑁)𝑗̂ − (77.17 𝑁)𝑘̂
b. 𝐹𝑅 = 194 𝑁; 𝛼 = 90.9°; 𝛽 = 76.4°; 𝛾 = 166°
