Britain and North America 1607-1800

Year Events

Europeans began arriving in North America, they found a land


with many natural resources and began to claim parts of it. While
1500s
the French moved into the North and the Spanish settled in the
South and West, the British founded colonies on the East Coast.

British settlers create a settlement in Jamestown, Virginia to

find gold, silver, trade goods and spread the Protestant religion.

French create the town of Quebec, in modern day Canada as a

trading post and a base to spread the Catholic religion.

The British colony of Massachusetts is established by the Pilgrim

Fathers. They are fleeing religious persecution in England.

Pennsylvania is created by William Penn. He is a Quaker (A


1664 protestant religious group separate from Church of England) and
wants to create a colony based on religious freedom.

Britain create the Hudson's Bay Company to develop trade with

Canada. The company is a rival of French traders in Canada.

Queen Anne's War between Britain and France is fought over


1702-13
trade and is a part of a war between 2 countries in Europe.

The British colony of Georgia is created. Britain now has 13

colonies in North America and more in Canada.

War resumes with France in King George's War and the war is
1744-48
fought over trade and land and problems in Europe.

Britain defeats France in French and Indian war and it is fought


1756-63 over trade and land, and is part of a worldwide war between the
two countries. Britain dominated all of the eastern North America.
British colonists in the 13 Colonies of the modern day eastern
1775 United States revolt against British rule. It was the start of
American War of Independence.

Britain is forced to give independence to the 13 colonies which

become the United States.

British colonial rule North America in the early 17th
century.
British colonies were created in North America to
acquire land, develop trade and spread Christianity.
Pilgrim Fathers were the first European settlers that left
England for America in the early 17th century.
Both Britain and French wanted to acquire new land
which caused conflict between the countries. By the
end of 18th century, Britain defeated France and
created a large colonial empire.
