CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT

STRATEGIES

LECTURE 3 (Part 1)
Prepared By
RUMANA TASNIM
INTRODUCTION
• With the rapid increase in number of mobile
users, the mobile service providers had to
follow strategies which ensure the effective
utilization of the limited radio spectrum.
• A variety of channel assignment strategies
have been followed to fulfill these objectives
 Increasing systemcapacity
 Minimizing interference
Cells in Geographical Area
INTRODUCTION

 There are three strategies for

channel assignment

 Fixed Channel Assignment

 Dynamic Channel Assignment
 Hybrid Channel Assignment
Fixed Channel Assignment
• In fixed channel assignment strategy each cell
is allocated a fixed number of voice channels.
• Any communication within the cell can only be
made with the designated unused channels of
that particular cell.
• Suppose if all the channels are occupied, then
the call is blocked and subscriber has to wait.
Several variation exist like borrowing strategy
Fixed Channel Assignment

 A cell is allowed to borrow a channel from

neighboring cell if all of its channels are occupied

 A mobile switching center (MSC) supervises such

procedures and ensures that borrowing of channel
does not disrupt or interfere with any of the calls in
progress in the donor cell

 In FCA channels are allocated in a manner that

maximize Frequency reuse.
FIXED CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT

In cell A 20 Channels or Voice channels are allocated. If all

channels are occupied and user make a call then the call is
blocked. Borrowing Channels handles this type of problem.
In this cell borrow channels from other cells.
Dynamic Channel Assignment

• Dynamic Channel allocation is a strategy

in which channels are not permanently
allocated to the cells

• In dynamic channel assignment strategy

channels are temporarily assigned for
use in cells for the duration of the call.
Dynamic Channel Assignment
• When a User makes a call request from a cell, then
the corresponding Base Station (BS) send that
request to the Mobile Station Center (MSC) for the
allocation of channels or voice channels.

• This way the likelihood of blocking calls is reduced.

• As traffic increases more channels are assigned and

vice-versa

• The MSC then allocates a channel to that BS.

Dynamic Channel Assignment
• After the call is over, the channel is
returned and kept in a central pool.

• It increased the trunking capacity of the

network as all of the channels are available
to all cells.

• This type of assignment strategy results in

heavy load on switching center at heavy
traffic condition.
Dynamic Channel Assignment

• To avoid co-channel interference any

channel that is in use in one cell can
only be reassigned simultaneously to
another cell in the system if the
distance between the two cells is
larger than minimum reuse distance.
Advantages of Dynamic Channel Allocation
 Dynamic channel allocation schemes allots
channels as needed. This results in optimum
utilization of network resources.

 There are less chances of denial of services and

call blocking in case of voice transmission.
These schemes adjust bandwidth allotment
according to traffic volume, and so are
particularly suitable for huge traffic.
Disadvantages of Dynamic channel
allocation

 Dynamic channel allocation schemes

increases the computational as well as
storage load on the system.
Channel Assignment Strategies

 Frequency reuse scheme

 Increases capacity
 Minimizes interference

 The choice of channel Assignment strategy

impacts the performance of the system
