5 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
5.1 Personnel
Radiographic Examinations shall only be performed by qualified persons who have demonstrated
their abilities to meet the requirements of Cimtas Pipe Written Procedure QCP-A12 that comply to
SNT-TC-1A and ASME Section V requirements. Uncertified personnel may only be perform auxiliary
work such as preparation of the parts, cleaning, marking etc. under constant supervision of certified
personnel.
5.2 Equipments
1) Sources
Gamma-ray sources shall be used for the radiography of welds and parent materials where the
penetrated thickness is in the range of 5mm-80mm. Suitable devices which are in good condition,
properly maintained and subject to regular inspection shall be used. The source manufacturer’s
certificate shall be accepted as source size verification.
2) Film Viewer
Radiographic film evaluations shall be performed by means of controlled light instruments called film
viewer (illuminator).
3) Densitometer
Photoelectric equipment’s which measure the radiographic film density. Densitometers shall be
calibrated by RT Level II at every 3 months as follows ;
a) A national step wedge film having at least 5 steps with neutral densities from
at least 1.0 through 4.0 shall be used. Wedge films shall be used without
verification for one year upon opening, provided it is within the manufacturer’s
stated shelf life (3 years).
b) The density steps closest to 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 on the step wedge calibration
film shall be read. This reading shall be recorded to “Calibration Record Log”.
Attachment – 6.
c) Density readings shall not be vary by more than ±0.05 density units from the
actual density stated on the step wedge calibration film.
d) Periodic calibration verification checks shall be performed at the beginning of
the each shift, after 8 hr of continuous use or after change of apertures,
6 INSTRUCTIONS
A single-wall technique shall be used for radiography wherever practical. When it is not practical to
use single-wall technique, double-wall technique shall be used. An adequate number of exposure
shall be made to required coverage has been obtained.
a) Single-Wall Technique
In the single-wall technique, the radiation passes through only one wall of the weld (material),
which is viewed for acceptance on the radiograph.
b) Double-Wall Technique
When it is not practical to use single-wall technique, one of the following double-wall
techniques shall be used.
For materials and for welds in components, a technique may be used in which the radiation
passes through two walls and only the weld (material) on the film side wall is viewed for
acceptance on the radiograph. When complete coverage is required for circumferential
weld (materials), a minimum of three exposures taken 120 deg. to each other shall be
made.
For materials and for welds in components 3 in.(89mm) or less in nominal outside diameter,
a technique may be used in which the radiation passes through two walls and only the weld
(material) in both walls is viewed for acceptance on the same radiograph. For double-wall
viewing, only a source side penetrameter shall be used.
I.) For welds, the radiation beam may be offset from the plane of the weld at an angle
sufficient to separate the images of the source side and film side portions of the weld
so that there is no overlap of the areas to be interpreted. When complete coverage is
required, a minimum of two exposures taken 90 deg. to each other shall be made for
each joint.
II.) As an alternative, the weld may be radiographed with the radiation beam positioned
so that the images of both walls are superimposed. When complete coverage is
required, a minimum of three exposures taken at either 60 deg. or 120 deg. to each
other shall be made for each joint.
III.) Additional exposures shall be made if the required radiographic coverage cannot be
obtained using the minimum number of exposures indicated in (I) or (II) above.
The parameters which govern the examination of individual pipe diameters and pipe wall thickness shall
be laid down on individual technique sheets. The technique sheets shall comply with the requirements
of ASME V Article 2 Paragraph T-291. ASME Article 2 Non-mandatory Appendix A. Exposure
arrangements for individual tecniques shall be one of either a), b) or c) below:
a.) Single Wall Single Image Technique - Film outside, source inside (panoramic).
b.) Double Wall Single Image Technique. Film and source outside and employed when the outside
diameter of the pipe is 90mm or greater.
c.) Double Wall Double Image Technique. Film and source outside and employed when the outside
diameter of pipe is less than 89 mm.
The technique sheets which shall support this procedure and which detail the range of pipe sizes and
schedule as well as the geometrical configuration and exposure arrangements are contained in
Attachment-1.
6.2.1 Films
Films used in conjunction with this procedure shall conform to the requirements of ASTM
SE-94 and shall be one of either type a) or type b) or type c) below:
a.) Type 1 Extra fine and medium speed (Agfa-D4, Kodak M, Fuji IX50).
b.) Type 1-2 Extra fine and relatively fast (Agfa- D5, Kodak T, Fuji IX80).
The type of film used shall normally be Type 2. The actual brand and film designation (type)
shall be recorded on the individual technique sheet as applicable.
Where the required radiographic sensitivity is unobtainable using Type 2 film, Type 1 film
may be substitute in which case the radiographic exposure value shall be increased by a
predetermined factor to improve sensitivity.

PROCEDURE
All films used for the purpose of this procedure shall be cassette loaded in intimate contact
with lead screens which conform to the requirements of section 6.2.2 or Pb rollpac type.
6.2.2 Screens
Lead foil screens or pb rollpac type (pre leaded) films shall be used in all techniques. The
thickness of the front and back screen shall be 0.125 mm + 0,125 mm (recorded on
individual technique sheets).
All screens shall be handled carefully to avoid dents and scratches or dirt and grease on
the active surface. Grease and lint may be removed from surface with a solvent.
1.) Materials:
The area of interest shall satisfy the requirements of the applicable specification, with
additional conditioning, if necessary, by any suitable process to a degree that
surface irregularities can not mask or be confused with discontinuities.
2.) Welds:
The welding ripples or weld surface irregularities on both the inside (where accessible)
and outside shall be removed by any suitable means to such a degree that the
resulting radiographic image due to any irregularities can not mask or be confused
with the image of any discontinuity.
RT Level II shall decide the actual test areas on the construction, on the basis of the
specification, drawing, code, standards.
The assessment of the image quality of each radiograph shall be converted into a
numerical value by means of an Image Quality Indicator (IQI). The quality of each
radiograph, the sensitivity for the exposure arrangement in question, shall be expressed
as a percentage of the thickness of the specimen being examined and shall be equal to or
better than the value recorded on the applicable radiographic technique sheet.
ASME SE 747 wire type Image Quality Indicator (IQI) shall be used in accordance with
the requirements of ASME V Article 2 Table T-276. (See Table 1)
a.) For material thickness up to 9.5 mm use ASME SE 747 Set A wires 0.08-0.25 mm
(0.0032” – 0.010”).
b.) For material thickness in the range 9.5 to 50.8 mm use ASME SE 747 Set B wires
0.25-0.81 mm (0.010” – 0.032”).
c.) For material thickness in the range 50.8 to 254 mm use ASME SE 747 Set C wires
0.81-2.5 mm (0.032” – 0.1”)
For welds where one or more film holders are used for an exposure, at least one IQI image
shall appear on each radiograph except for cylindrical welds where the source is placed on
the axis of the object and one or more film holders are used for a single exposure of a
complete circumference, in this case at least three IQI shall be use spaced approximately
120 º apart.
Where sections of longitudinal welds adjoining the circumferential weld are radiographed
simultaneously with circumferential weld, an additional Image Quality Indicator (IQI) shall
be placed on each longitudinal weld at the end of each section most remote from the
junction with the circumferential weld being radiographed.
When the source is placed on the axis of the circumference and a portion of the
circumference (four or more film locations), is radiographed during a single exposure,
additional, film locations may be required around the circumference to establish 120 degree
spacing otherwise at least one IQI image shall appear on each film.
Image Quality Indicators shall be in the radiation beam, in intimate contact with the
specimen being examined, so it is projected radiographically through the section being
examined. When impractical to place the IQI on the source side of the specimen, it shall
be placed on the film side in intimate contact with the section being examined. Image
Quality Indicator (IQI) placed on the film side of the specimen being examined shall be
identified by having a lead letter “F” placed next to it as to be visible on the radiograph.
The Image Quality Indicators shall be placed across the weld at the edge of the diagnostic
area with the thinnest element outermost, the identification number and the lead “F” when
used, shall not appear in the area of interest.
The sensitivity of radiographs produced in accordance with this procedure shall meet the
requirements of ASME V Article 2 Table T-276. IQI shall be selected from either the same
alloy material group or grade as identified in SE-747 that summarized on Table 1.
For welds with reinforcements, the thickness on which the IQI is based is the nominal
single-wall thickness plus the estimated weld reinforcement thickness, that shall be
representative of the weld conditions and shall not exceed the maximum permitted by the
referencing Code Section. Backing rings or strips shall not be considered as part of the
thickness in IQI selection. The actual measurement of the weld reinforcement is not
required.
For welds without reinforcements, the thickness on which the IQI is based is the nominal
single- wall thickness.
The distance between the object to be radiographed and the film shall be minimum so
making sure of good contact between them.
TABLE 1
ASTM IQI ASTM IQI SELECTION
Wire ID.
Where other practical considerations take preference the physical dimensions of the focal
spot or source size quoted on the technique sheet may be increased. In order to
compensate for the increase in size of the focal spot and to redress the requirement of the
maximum permissible geometrical unsharpness. It shall be considered necessary to
increase the source to film distance accordingly.
(Ug) = Fd / D
F = Source Size: the maximum projected dimention of the radiating source (or effective
focal spot) in the plane perpendicular to the distance D from the weld or object being
radiographed.
D = Source to object distance: Distance from source of radiation to weld or object being
radiographed.
d = Object to film distance: Distance from source side of weld or object being radiographed
to the film.
D and d shall be determined at the approximate center of the area of interest.
In accordance with ASME Vlll Div.1 - UW 51 the above requirements shall be used for
guidance only and the final acceptance of radiographs shall be based on the ability to see
the prescribed IQI image.
Minimum 11 mm height and min 1.5 mm thickness lead lettter ‘B’ shall be attached to the
back of the film cassette. A dark image of the “B” on a lighter background is not cause for
rejection.
Where the image of this letter ‘B’ appears on the radiograph as a lighter image, the area
shall be re-shot.
The film density of the radiographic image of the length of weld under examination shall not be less
than 2.0 for single film viewing for radiographs made with an gamma-ray source. For composite
viewing of multiple film exposures, each film of the composite set shall have a minimum density of
1.3. The maximum density shall be 4.0 for either single or composite viewing. A tolerance of 0.05 in
density is allowed for variations between densitometer readings.
If the density of the radiograph anywhere through the area of interest varies by more than minus 15
% or plus 30 % from the density through the body of the IQI, within the allowable minimum/maximum
allowable density ranges specified in above, then an additional IQI shall be used for each exceptional
area or areas and the radiograph shall be retaken. When calculating the allowable variation in density
the calculation may be rounded to the nearest 0.1 within the range specified in above.
When more than one IQI is required one shall be representative of the lightest area of interest, the
intervening densities on the radiograph shall be considered as having acceptable density.
All radiographs shall be unambiguously identified by the use of letters and numbers or suitable film
marking methods (such as flashlight identification etc.). This will include the job no, line number,
spool or section number, joint no, Manufacturer’s name and date of radiograph (See Film
Identification sketch). Where feasible the circumferential position of the portion under examination
shall be positively located by means of the clock faced method. Where possible the 12 o’clock
position for radiographic purposes shall coincide with the 12 o”clock welding positions.
Location Markers shall be use of lead numbers which are to appear as radiographic images on the
film, shall be placed on the item to be radiographed not on the film holder/cassette and their location
shall be marked on the item being radiographed or on a map of the item in a manner permitting the
area of interest on the radiograph to be accurately traceable to its location on the part for the required
retention period of the radiograph, and give evidence on the radiograph that the required coverage
of the region being examined has been obtained. Location Markers shall be placed as follows:

PROCEDURE
b.) Curved or spherical components whose concave side is towards the source and
when the source to material distance is less than the inside radius of the component.
c.) Curved or spherical components whose convex side is towards the source.
a.) Film side markers shall be used when radiographing curved or spherical
components whose concave side is towards the source and when the source to
material distance is greater than the inside radius.
b.) As an alternate for source side markers in para. 6.4.1 (1) film side markers may be
used when the radiograph shows coverage beyond the location markers.
Either source side or film side markers may be used when radiographing curved or
spherical components whose concave side is towards the source and the source to
material distance is equal to the inside radius of the component.
For double wall viewing, at least one location marker shall be placed on the outside surface
adjacent to the weld (or on the material in the area of interest) for each radiograph.
When inaccessibility or other limitations prevent the location of markers as stipulated in para
6.4., dimensioned map of the geometric arrangement including marker locations shall
accompany the radiographs and shall show that full coverage has been obtained.
6.6 illuminator
The illuminator must provide light of an intensity that will illuminate the average density areas
of the radiograph without glare and it must diffuse the light evenly over the viewing area.
The illuminator shall be suitable for densities up to 4.0. Masks shall be available to exclude
any extraneous light from the eye of the viewer when viewing radiographs smaller than the
viewing port or to cover low density areas.
Subdued lighting rather than total darkness is preferable in the dark room. The brightness of
the surroundings shall be about the same as the area of interest in the radiograph. Room
illumination must be so arranged that there are no reflection from the surface of the films under
test.
