Data Sheet

Features Summary
• Enclosed rubber Bellows Seal
• Ideal for equipment where space is restricted
• Fitted with 'top hat' plug as standard to aid
assembly
• Boot Mounted Stationary

Product Description Performance Capabilities

Compact, enclosed Rubber Bellows Seal, with Boot Temperature:
Mounted Stationary, with a smooth outer profile. The
very short working length makes the Type 18 ideal for Minimum Maximum
equipment where seal chamber space is restricted. Nitrile -30°C +120°C
EP -40°C +140°C
Our Type 18 rotaries are supplied with 'top hat' metal Viton® -30°C +180°C
retainer inserted in the tail of the Seal, to provide support
to the bellows, prior to fitting. Please remove this prior to
installation. Pressure: Up to 4.8 bar (70 psi)

Important: These limits are the theoretical elastomer

or design limitations. For maximum theoretical operating
pressure for your specific size and application please refer
to calculation sheet within this data sheet. All performance
information given is for guidance only and is dependent on
material, operating and application factors that affect seal
performance.

Maximum Operating Pressure TYPE 18 PV Chart

The PV chart shows the maximum operating pressures
of this Vulcan seal type based on the seal face materials
used.

It also assumes stable operation at the speeds shown

in the multiplier tables below, in a clean, cool, lubricating
and non-volatile fluid with an adequate flush rate.

To calculate the approximate maximum operating

pressure for a specific duty, multiply the pressure value
obtained from the chart opposite for a particular seal shaft
size by the appropriate factors given in the tables below.

Based on Carbon vs Ceramic

Application Conditions Face and Seat Materials

Criteria Multiplier Combination Multiplier
Product Fluid Lubricating fluids X 1.00 Carbon vs Ceramic x 0.50
Aqueous solutions / Water X 0.85 Carbon vs Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide x 0.90
Temperature Below 70°C (158°F) X 1.00 Tungsten Carbide vs Tungsten Carbide x 0.50
71°C to 120°C (160°F to 248°F) X 0.85 Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide vs Reaction Bonded x 0.50
121°C to 175°C (250°F to 347°F) X 0.75 Silicon Carbide
Over 176°C (349°F) X 0.60
Speed Up to 1750 R.P.M. X 1.00
1750 to 3600 R.P.M. X 0.80

Example Calculation for Type 18 Guidance Only

A. Shaft size: 1” therefore pressure is 4.8 bar (from PV Please note that due to the many operational and
chart) application variables that affect seal performance,
B. Media: Water (multiplier = 0.85) the information given on this page is for guidance
C. Temperature: 50°C (multiplier = 1.00) only.
D. Speed: 1450 R.P.M. (multiplier = 1.00)
E. Face combination: Carbon vs Ceramic (multiplier = We therefore strongly recommend careful individual
0.50) testing and monitoring of all seals and related
equipment for any proposed application.
For this particular Type 18 seal size, the calculation for
the approximate guidance maximum operating pressure Our policy is one of continuous technical and
would be: efficiency improvement. As such, all specifications
may be subject to change without prior notice.

A x B x C x D x E

4.8 bar x 0.85 x 1.00 x 1.00 x 0.50 = 2.04 bar
