Welcome to TLE 10 - AFA - (Organic Agriculture Production)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Schools

Division of Iloilo and Dep Ed Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the Curriculum
and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning
facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide the
learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized
resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning
skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 10-AFA - (Organic Agriculture Production) Activity Sheet will help you
facilitate the teaching learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner.
This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 10 -AFA - (Organic Agriculture Production) Activity Sheet is developed

to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner
carefully read and understands the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

I. Background Information for Learners

This instructional material contains activities on how to monitor compost

o based on PNS indications of fully decomposed fertilizer. Accomplish the activities
in order to attain the desired competency. Go through the different activities on your
own. However, if you have problems you can contact your teacher and request for
assistance and guidance.

Importance of Monitoring Compost

Monitoring compost piles is done for several reasons: monitoring provides the
composter with insight into activity in the compost pile, and this information in turn
guides management choices regarding the specific piles you are monitoring, as well
as how you make and manage compost on an on - going basis.
Composting is a complicated biochemical reaction process that can be
influenced by many factors, such as carbon nitrogen ratio, moisture, oxygen and
aeration interaction, temperature, PH value, and raw material size of composting.

Factors Best range Comments

C : N ratio 25 – 35 : 1 Process proceeds rapidly with high
efficiency of N assimilation
Moisture 40 – 60% Diffusion of soluble molecules and
microbial enzymes
Aeration 10 – 30% Aerobic decomposition is more rapid
than anaerobic
Temperature 50 – 60 C Most of the pathogenic microorganisms
are killed
pH Normally not Organic waste suitable for composting
necessary have a range of pH from 5 – 12.
Particle size 10 – 50 mm 10 mm for agitated and force aeration, 50
mm for natural aeration

If there’s the right amount of oxygen and moisture, microbes can rapidly grow and
multiply. Too much or too little water, microbes will die. Compost materials should have a
thin film of water around them, and lots of pore spaces filled with air. Turning the compost, a
couple of times a week enables compost organisms get enough air and water.

Organic materials will eventually decay, even in a cold compost pile. But the decay
process is speeded up in a hot compost pile. When bacteria and fungi grow rapidly, they burn
a lot of food and give off a lot of heat. If the compost pile is big enough the heat will build up
inside the pile. Bacteria that grow well at high temperature took over and speed up the decay
process.
