• ABSTRACT
AC-to-AC converters are extensively used as AC voltage and
frequency controllers. The application area of the AC voltage
controllers includes the grid voltage compensation during the
problem of voltage sag and swell in power distribution system.
The major causes for these problems are system’s faults espe-
cially single line to ground, extensive use of non-linear loads or
devices. AC voltage can also be used for speed control of low
power ratting load. The speed regulation in high power ratting
rotating loads require the voltage as well as frequency control.

• OBJECTIVES

The required frequency range for induction process lies be-

tween 20 KHz to 100 KHz. This conversion process is realized

in two power conversion stages that increases the over all

size, cost and conversion losses as there is use of large num-

ber of switching devices and their control circuits. Also, the

use of controlled rectifier circuit at first stage, generates low

frequency harmonics in the input current that cannot be

easily filtered. The presence of DC link capacitor also lower

the reliability.
