Explaining the term ‘Emergency’
 Emergency is a situation where danger is
immediate
 Loss of life

 Injury

 Loss of or damage to property

 Damage to environment

Emergencies
 Emergencies require immediate action

 Various emergencies that may occur,


 Fire and collision

 grounding and foundering

 Man overboard

 Ingress of water

 Heavy weather

 Oil spill etc

Response to emergencies
 Alarm must be raised.

 Alarm can come from


 Ship general alarm

 Fire alarm

 Ship’s whistle etc

4.2 Drills and muster
 Muster list are available on all ships.

 Provide things to do during emergency


 It has individual name and job duties

 Specific duties allocated to crew

 Each crew belong to squad or team

 Meet at muster station for head count

emergency alarm
 Dress yourself adequately and properly

 Go to muster station

 Find the nature of the emergency

 Take action as per muster list instructions

4.3 Value and need for drills and training

 Three reasons why the need for drills


 By law (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM

etc)
 Operational need – regular training ingrained
into crew what to do during an emergency
 State of mind – so that they are mentally

prepared during an emergency, less chance


of getting panicky

during an emergency
 During emergency, there can be various
types of internal communication on board

 They are
• Telephone
• Public address system
• Walkie-talkies
• Lifeboat VHF etc
