Section A (30%) – Multiple-choice Questions. Use a pencil to mark your answers on the
multiple-choice answer sheet. There are 30 questions. Answer ALL
questions in this section on the multiple-choice answer sheet provided.
Each question carries 1 mark.
Section B (50%) – Short Questions. Use a pen to answer any FIVE out of SIX questions in
this section in the answer book. Each question carries 10 marks. If you
answer more than five questions, only the first five attempted questions
will be marked. Indicate in your answer book clearly which five
questions you are attempting.
Section C (20%) – Essay Questions. Use a pen to answer any ONE out of TWO questions in
this section in the answer book. You should present your answers in a
well-organized, logic and clear manner, with effective and accurate
writing to demonstrate your understanding of concepts. Each question
carries 20 marks. If you answer more than one question, only the first
attempted question will be marked. Indicate in your answer sheet clearly
which question you are attempting.
2. Electronic calculators, including programmable calculators, may be used provided that the
calculators are battery powered, silent in operation, with neither printout nor graphic /
word display facilities and do not use dot-matrix technology in the main display. All
programmes stored in the calculator should have been cleared. Other electronic devices
with graphic/ word-display facilities (such as databank watches) are not permitted.
3. You MUST put down the required personal details on the multiple-choice answer sheet, the
answer book, and any supplementary answer sheet(s).

(a) Describe the difference between chemical and nuclear reactions in terms of involvement of

(c) Suggest TWO means of protecting oneself from radiation. (4 marks)

(a) Explain why polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is the plastic suitable for coating of cooking pan.
Elaborate your answer in terms of the chemical structure of PTFE. (4 marks)

(b) State THREE methods of plastic moulding. (6 marks)

Question B3

(a) Write down TWO chemical equations involved in the preparation of molten iron from the
iron ore. (4 marks)

(b) What is the principal ore of aluminium? (2 marks)

(c) Describe the preparation method of aluminium from the aluminium ore with the support of a
chemical equation. (4 marks)

Question B4

(a) State TWO common waterborne diseases. (4 marks)

(b) Pollutant X is leaked into a pond containing 4.5*106 kg of water. The concentration of the
pollutant is 13 ppm. Calculate the amount of pollutant X (in kg) leaked into the pond.

(c) List ONE health issue caused by excessive nitrates in the water supply. (2 marks)

Question C1

Write an essay on radioactive decay. You should include the definitions and types of
radioactive decays with the differentiations in terms of decay particles, changes in the atomic
and mass numbers after decay, as well as the penetration power of the radiation. (20 marks)

Question C2

Water treatment plant is important to provide the clean water for domestic and industrial usage.
Write an essay on how the water treatment plant works for providing us the clean water. You
should include any physical and chemical methods that can remove the pollutants, kill the
pathogens, and enhance our health. (20 marks)
